## Overview
Local SEO puts businesses on the map — literally: the map pack, local finder, and location-based organic results. This skill covers the local SEO system: Google Business Profile optimization, NAP consistency and citations, review strategy, local content and links, and multi-location management.
Local SEO is how nearby customers find you: the map pack, local organic results, and review-driven discovery. For businesses serving geographic markets, it often outperforms all other channels combined on ROI. The fundamentals are unglamorous (accurate listings, real reviews, local content) but compound powerfully.
## When to use
- Ranking in the map pack for local queries
- Optimizing Google Business Profile
- Managing SEO for multiple locations
- Fixing NAP inconsistencies
- Building local citations and links
- Diagnosing local ranking drops
- Opening new locations
- Competing against chains with bigger budgets
- Capturing near-me searches in your category
- Managing SEO for 10+ locations
- Competing in the local pack against aggregators
- Handling multi-practitioner businesses (medical, legal)
## Core concepts
**The local ranking factors.** Relevance (does the listing match the query?), distance (proximity to searcher), and prominence (reviews, links, citations — reputation). You control relevance and prominence; optimize both relentlessly.
**Google Business Profile (GBP).** The single highest-leverage local asset: correct categories (primary matters most), complete info, quality photos (updated regularly), posts (weekly), Q&A (seed common questions), services/products listed, accurate hours (including holidays), and attributes. Fully optimized profiles dramatically outperform bare ones.
**NAP consistency.** Name, Address, Phone identical across the web — website, GBP, citations, social. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and customers. Audit and fix systematically.
**Reviews.** Quantity, velocity, rating, and response rate all influence local rankings. Review strategy (see review-manager skill) is inseparable from local SEO.
**Local citations.** Mentions on directories (general and niche). Prioritize: major data aggregators, industry-specific directories, local chambers/associations. Quality and consistency over sheer count — and clean up duplicates.
**Local links and content.** Links from local organizations, press, sponsorships, and partners. Location pages (for multi-location): unique content per location (not templated duplicates), local landmarks, staff, reviews, embedded map.
**The local pack ranking factors.** Proximity (searcher location — you cannot change this) → relevance (categories, keywords, content match) → prominence (reviews, links, citations). Focus energy on relevance and prominence: complete profiles, accurate categories, review velocity, and local links.
**NAP consistency.** Name, Address, Phone must match exactly across Google Business Profile, directories, and your website. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and suppress rankings. Audit quarterly with a citation scan; fix duplicates and variations ruthlessly.
**Review velocity and diversity.** Steady streams of reviews across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and industry platforms beat bursts on one.
Aim for 5–10 new reviews per location monthly; respond to all within 48 hours.
Review recency is a ranking factor — a 4.8 from last month beats a 5.0 from last year.
**Local link building.** Chambers of commerce, local sponsorships, community events, local press, neighborhood partnerships, and supplier relationships.
One local newspaper link outperforms ten generic directory submissions.
Build relationships, not just links — the links follow genuine community involvement.
**Multi-location management.** Centralized GBP management with location-level customization; bulk verification; location page templates with unique content per location; review response workflows per market.
Consistency at scale requires systems — spreadsheets break at 20+ locations.
## Practical workflow
1. **Audit.** GBP completeness score, NAP consistency (scan top citations), review profile vs. competitors, local keyword rankings (map pack + organic), citation inventory, local link profile.
2. **Optimize GBP.** Correct primary category + relevant secondaries, complete every field, upload 10+ quality photos, start weekly posts, seed Q&A, verify hours. This alone often moves rankings.
3. **Fix NAP and citations.** Standardize the canonical NAP format. Update website (footer + contact page with structured data), then top-tier citations, then long tail. Suppress duplicates.
4. **Build reviews.** Systematic generation (post-visit requests), respond to all reviews, monitor velocity vs. competitors. Reviews compound — start now.
5. **Create local content.** Location pages with genuinely unique content, local blog content (events, guides, partnerships), and local link building (sponsorships, local PR, partnerships, chamber membership).
6. **Manage multi-location.** Centralized standards + local execution: brand-level GBP management tools, per-location unique content, local review response (local voice), and per-location performance tracking.
**GBP weekly routine:** 1 post, check Q&A for new questions, respond to new reviews, verify hours/holiday hours, add new photos monthly.
**Google Business Profile optimization:** primary category (exact match to main service) → secondary categories → complete every field (hours, services, attributes) → 10+ high-quality photos (real, not stock) → products/services listed → Q&A seeded with real questions → posts weekly → review responses within 24 hours. This alone beats 80% of local competitors.
**Local content strategy:** location pages (unique content per location — never templated duplicates) → local guides and resources → community involvement content → local link building (chambers, sponsorships, local press, partnerships). One quality local link beats ten generic directory listings.
**Monthly local SEO routine:** review rankings (map pack + organic) per location → audit new reviews and respond → check NAP consistency → publish one local content piece → build 2–3 local links → verify GBP posts and photos are current.
Systematize per location; the routine scales where heroics do not.
**Competitor gap analysis:** identify top 3 local competitors → compare review counts/ratings, citation profiles, content depth, and GBP completeness → close the biggest gaps first.
Local SEO is relative — you only need to beat the businesses on your block.
## Common pitfalls
- **Incomplete GBP.** Bare profiles with wrong categories. The profile is your local homepage — treat it that way.
- **NAP chaos.** Five address variants across the web. Pick one canonical format; enforce everywhere.
- **Duplicate listings.** Old addresses, practitioner listings, duplicates splitting reviews and confusing Google. Find and merge/remove.
- **Templated location pages.** 50 identical pages with swapped city names. Write genuinely unique local content or consolidate.
- **Ignoring reviews.** The review-rating gap vs. competitors is often the ranking gap. Close it.
- **Keyword-stuffed business names.** Adding keywords to the GBP name violates guidelines and risks suspension. Use the real business name.
- **No local links.** Citations without links plateau. Earn local links through community involvement.
- **Keyword-stuffed business names.** Adding keywords to your GBP name ("Joe's Plumbing | Best Plumber Chicago") violates guidelines and risks suspension. Use your real business name.
- **Ignoring reviews.** Review count, rating, and recency are top prominence signals. No review strategy = no local growth.
- **One location page for many areas.** Thin "service area" pages with swapped city names. Each location needs genuinely unique, useful content.
- **Duplicate location pages.** Templated pages with only the city name changed. Google demotes thin duplicates — write genuinely unique content per location.
- **Ignoring Apple Maps.** iPhone users default to Apple Maps. Claim and optimize listings there too — it is 10 minutes of work for meaningful visibility.
