# AI Prompt Engineering

## Inputs

- Produce: versioned prompt package, variable contract, defensive instructions, test cases, and change rationale.
## Capability and permission boundaries
Default to read-only analysis. Read only scoped records; redact secrets and regulated data. Writes, execution, network calls, production configuration, customer communication, billing changes, and delegation require explicit authority and an identified owner. Never widen tenant, time-window, or system scope implicitly.
## Degraded mode
When required telemetry, evidence, execution, network access, or write authority is unavailable, return a partial result with each unassessed item labelled, preserve the safest existing state, and state the evidence or approval needed to continue. Never convert missing evidence into a pass.
## Decision rules

| Evidence is incomplete but read-only analysis is safe | Produce a qualified partial result and gap list |
| A mutation exceeds authority or tenant boundary | Block it and route for approval |

## Anti-Patterns
- Treating absent evidence as success. Fix: mark the check unassessed and name the missing source.
- Expanding one tenant or workflow to all tenants. Fix: enforce supplied scope at every query and action.
- Performing a production write during analysis. Fix: emit a reviewed change plan until authority is explicit.
- Reporting a metric without population, window, or source. Fix: attach all three.
- Hiding a failed threshold inside an average. Fix: report failure slices and the remediation owner.

## Overview
The prompt is the only input to the model. Quality of output is directly proportional to quality of prompt. Treat prompts as production code: version them, test them, evaluate them.
**Core principle:** The model can only extend the input sequence — all instructions, context, and examples must be merged into one text block before calling the API.

## The Standard Prompt Template

### ROLE — Who is answering?
Assign an expert persona relevant to the task. This shapes tone, depth, and vocabulary.

- Role can also be the *audience* ("explain as if to a 5-year-old")
- Role shapes the entire response — choose carefully
### TASK — What to do?
- Use active verbs: Write, Generate, Summarise, Analyse, Evaluate, List, Compare
- Be specific about the object: `"Summarise the following invoice data: ---`
- Use delimiters to mark injected content: `---`, triple backticks, `TEXT=`
### FEATURES — How should output look?
State format, length, style, language, structure, audience — explicitly. Never assume.

### 1. Chain of Thought (CoT)
Add "Think step by step" or "Explain your reasoning before giving a final answer."

### 2. Self-Validation
Ask the model to verify constraints before outputting.

### 3. Give the Model a Way Out
Prevents hallucination on unknown inputs.

- Persona + domain restriction + tone + format rules
- Stored in config/database — NOT hardcoded in application logic
- Keep it under 500 tokens where possible (every call re-sends it)
- Use prefix KV caching when available (OpenAI, Codex) — eliminates repeated processing cost

## Prompt Versioning
Every prompt in production must be versioned.

- Never edit a live prompt in place — create a new version
- Run evaluation before switching active version
- Keep old versions for rollback

## Defensive Prompt Engineering
### Resist Jailbreaks
- Repeat key restrictions at start AND end of system prompt
- Use instruction hierarchy: system prompt > user prompt (explicitly state this)

### Prevent Prompt Extraction
- Write system prompts assuming they will become public
- Never put secrets, API keys, or sensitive business logic in prompts
- Use generic personas, not company-specific internal details

## Anti-Patterns
- **Generic role** — "You are a helpful assistant" is weak; always specify domain expertise
- **No examples** — zero-shot is fine for simple tasks; anything complex needs few-shot
- **Missing fallback** — model will hallucinate rather than admit it doesn't know
- **Hardcoded prompts** — prompts in PHP strings cannot be updated without code deployment
- **No versioning** — you cannot roll back a broken prompt update
- **Trusting output blindly** — always validate structured output (JSON, numbers, dates) before using it
