# Quantum Prior Chaos Forecasting
Methodology from arXiv:2606.13422 (Jun 2026): practical quantum advantage in quantum-informed machine learning for chaotic dynamical systems.
## Core Concept: Q-Priors
k-indexed higher-order quantum statistical priors (Q-Priors) store the k-point marginal of the invariant measure on n_q = k*q qubits, extending single-site constructions.
### Two-Stage Quantum Advantage
**Stage 1 - Representation**: Superposition and entanglement compactly store non-factorisable spatial correlations of the invariant measure on n_q qubits.
**Stage 2 - Extraction**: Joint Bell measurements on two copies estimate any post hoc Pauli functional with a copy-pair count **independent of n_q**. Any adaptive single-copy protocol for full-Pauli read-out requires Omega(2^(n_q)) copies — a provable quantum-classical separation in copy-measurement complexity.
## Implementation
### Q-Prior Construction
```
Q-Prior_k(q) = quantum state encoding k-point marginals of invariant measure
n_q = k * q qubits
```
The Q-Prior is constructed by:
1. Sampling trajectories from the chaotic system
2. Encoding k-point correlation functions into quantum amplitudes
3. Using entanglement to compress non-factorisable correlations
### Two-Copy Read-Out Protocol
```
1. Prepare two identical copies of the Q-Prior state
2. Apply joint Bell measurement across corresponding qubit pairs
3. Estimate Pauli observable expectations from measurement statistics
4. Copy complexity is O(1/epsilon^2) independent of system size
```
### Case Studies
1. **Turbulent Channel Flow**: Two-copy read-out yields velocity-direction coherence (non-diagonal correlator of invariant measure)
2. **Weather Forecasting (ERA5)**: Diagonal k<=2 Q-Prior steers Koopman rollout, improves anomaly-correlation skill by 10-39% across 48-240h lead times, reduces long-horizon collapse onto static mean field
## Practical Advantage Conditions
Both conditions of the practical-advantage definition are met at complementary levels, identifying a candidate route to practical quantum advantage before fault-tolerant hardware.
The two-copy read-out has been realized in simulation and on IQM superconducting processors.
## Pitfalls
- Q-Prior construction requires sufficient trajectory sampling for accurate invariant measure estimation
- Joint Bell measurements need two identical copies — state preparation fidelity matters
- Diagonal Q-Priors (k<=2) sufficient for Koopman steering but may miss higher-order correlations
- NISQ hardware noise limits achievable qubit counts; advantage demonstrated at small scale
