# FLARE++: Low-rank Attention with Dynamic Attention Routing
## Overview
FLARE++ is an efficient transformer architecture that achieves linear O(NM) complexity while maintaining the expressivity of full self-attention. It extends the Fast Low-rank Attention Routing Engine (FLARE) by using dynamic, input-conditioned latent queries instead of fixed learned query templates.
## Key Innovations
1. **Dynamic Token Routing**: Instead of using fixed learned latent queries, FLARE++ uses the input tokens themselves to generate M input-conditioned queries through an additional encode call
2. **Preserved Low-Rank Factorization**: Maintains FLARE's explicit low-rank factorization structure
3. **Standard SDPA Compatibility**: Expresses the complete routing operation using only standard scaled dot-product attention calls
4. **Multi-GPU Context Parallelism**: Provides implementation that shards input tokens across devices without gathering full sequences
## Architecture Details
### Core Mechanism
- Start with N input tokens
- Use learned latent seeds to drive one extra encode call
- This gathers N input tokens into M input-conditioned queries
- These dynamic queries determine how tokens are compressed and redistributed
- Complexity remains O(NM) where M << N
### Mathematical Formulation
The routing operation can be expressed as:
```
Q_dynamic = Attention(Latent_Seeds, X, X)
Output = Attention(Q_dynamic, X, X)
```
Where X represents the input token sequence.
## Performance Benefits
- **24% average improvement** over fixed-query FLARE on PDE surrogate benchmarks
- **2.3 points average accuracy gain** on Long Range Arena
- Maintains linear scalability for high-resolution problems
## Implementation Guidelines
### When to Use
- High-resolution PDE surrogate modeling on irregular domains
- Long sequence processing where quadratic attention cost is prohibitive
- Scenarios requiring full self-attention expressivity with linear complexity
### Multi-GPU Implementation
For distributed training:
1. Shard input tokens across GPU devices
2. Avoid gathering full token sequence on any single device
3. Use context-parallel attention computation
## Pitfalls and Considerations
- Requires careful tuning of the number of latent queries (M)
- The additional encode call adds some overhead but maintains overall linear complexity
- Best suited for problems where token interactions are global rather than local
