# BaKron: Efficient Quantization with Kronecker-Factored Hessians
## Overview
BaKron is an efficient solver for neural network quantization that leverages Kronecker-factored approximations of the Hessian matrix. It builds on two-sided adaptive rounding formulations (like BoA and YAQA) but introduces anti-diagonal parallelism with recursive divide-and-conquer construction to achieve cubic scaling O(mn(m+n)) instead of O(m²n²).
## Key Features
- **Efficient computation**: Uses O(m+n) sequential steps with total work O(mn(m+n))
- **Rich curvature information**: Captures correlations across output coordinates through two-sided Hessian approximations
- **Modular design**: Compatible with any base quantizer and Hessian estimator
- **Matches GPTQ scaling**: Achieves same cubic complexity as GPTQ while using richer information
## When to Use
- When you need more accurate quantization than GPTQ provides
- When working with large weight matrices where full Hessian computation is prohibitive
- When you want to leverage output coordinate correlations for better quantization
- For post-training quantization of large language models or other neural networks
## Implementation Steps
1. **Choose Hessian estimator**: Select appropriate Kronecker-factored Hessian approximation method
2. **Compute efficient Hessians**: Use the paper's recommended technique for efficient Hessian computation
3. **Apply BaKron algorithm**:
- Implement anti-diagonal parallelism
- Use recursive divide-and-conquer construction
- Apply two-sided adaptive rounding formulation
4. **Integrate with base quantizer**: Combine with your preferred quantization scheme (e.g., INT4, INT8)
5. **Benchmark performance**: Evaluate against GPTQ and other baselines
## Pitfalls to Avoid
- **Memory overhead**: Ensure your implementation handles the memory requirements efficiently
- **Hessian quality**: Poor Hessian approximations will degrade quantization quality
- **Numerical stability**: Pay attention to numerical precision in the recursive construction
## Verification
- Compare quantization accuracy against GPTQ on the same model
- Measure computational time to ensure O(mn(m+n)) scaling is achieved
- Validate that output coordinate correlations are properly captured
