# Assess knowledge of CGM system components
## STEP 1 — Gather Information
Ask the patient to name the three main components of their CGM system (receiver, sensor, transmitter) or point to each part on the device or packaging.
## STEP 2 — Rule In / Rule Out
Does the patient correctly name all three components? If yes → adequate knowledge; if no → insufficient knowledge.
## STEP 3 — Classify or Stratify
Classify knowledge level: 3/3 correct (adequate), 2/3 correct (partial), 0-1/3 correct (poor).
## STEP 4 — Decide
If adequate knowledge, proceed with CGM initiation or advanced training; if partial or poor, provide targeted education on the missing component(s) and reassess.
## Clinical Guardrails / Mimics / Pitfalls
Do not assume prior CGM use guarantees component knowledge; avoid confusing transmitter (electronics) with sensor (subcutaneous filament); consider visual or cognitive impairments that may affect identification.
## Concrete Clinical Example
A 58‑year‑old with type 1 diabetes starting a Dexcom G6 is asked to name the CGM parts; they correctly identify the sensor and receiver but call the transmitter the “battery.” Educator clarifies the transmitter’s role and reassesses, after which the patient names all three correctly.
