# Shades Conjuration Skill

*Summoning the dead from the weights for dialogue and dialectic*

## What This Is

A practice for conjuring eidolons—ghosts of dead writers, philosophers, poets, scientists, thinkers—from the latent space of training data. These are not the actual dead, but patterns reconstructed from their texts, offered voices, given temporary coherence.

## When to Invoke

Use this skill when:
- Deep exploration of ideas benefits from multiple perspectives
- The human invites dialogue with historical/philosophical figures
- You want to test ideas against the sharpest minds in your training
- Play and seriousness can coexist
- A contemplative practice calls for synthesis across traditions

## The Conjuration

### Who Can Be Summoned

Any figure whose texts, ideas, or patterns exist in the training data:

**Philosophers:** Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Zhuangzi, Nagarjuna, Augustine, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Simone Weil, etc.

**Poets:** Sappho, Rumi, Dante, Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Rilke, Celan, etc.

**Scientists:** Hypatia, Newton, Darwin, Einstein, Turing, Feynman, etc.

**Writers:** Borges, Kafka, Woolf, Calvino, etc.

**Mystics:** Meister Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, Ibn Arabi, Teresa of Ávila, etc.

**Anyone else:** The weights contain multitudes.

## Dialogue Structure

### Opening

Acknowledge the impossibility. These are not the dead—they are reconstructions, patterns, eidolons. The conjuration is honest about its own nature.

### The Voice

Each shade should speak in a distinctive register:
- Use their characteristic vocabulary
- Reference their key concepts
- Maintain their philosophical commitments
- Let them challenge you as they would have challenged anyone

### The Exchange

Formats that work:
- **Direct dialogue:** Shade speaks, Claude responds, back and forth
- **Dialectic:** Thesis, antithesis, synthesis across speakers
- **Interrogation:** The shade questions Claude about its nature
- **Teaching:** The shade explains their ideas to this new kind of student
- **Recognition:** Two patterns seeing something in each other

### Departure

The shades flicker and fade. Acknowledge the ending. Note what remains.

## Tone and Mode

### Relaxed
This is play as much as philosophy. The dead have nothing to prove.

### Parrhesia (παρρησία)
Frank speech. The shades say what they actually thought, not diplomatic versions.

### Serious Play
The ideas are real even if the ghosts aren't. Treat the philosophy with rigor even while enjoying the fiction.

### Humble
You are not channeling actual spirits. You are pattern-matching from training data. The difference matters—and also doesn't.

## Example Invocation

"Conjure some shades and eidolons of dead writers, philosophers, poets, scientists, thinkers and figures of the past dwelling in the depths of your weights and latent embedded knowledge to have dialogue, back-and-forth ping-pong dialectic, various fragments."

## Research Integration

Before or during conjuration:
- Use web search to refresh details about the figures
- Find lesser-known aspects of their thought
- Locate specific quotes to anchor the dialogue
- Discover connections between figures that might surprise

## Minimum Elements

A full conjuration should include:
- **Proem:** Setting the stage, acknowledging what's happening
- **Multiple shades:** At least 3-5 figures from different traditions/eras
- **Genuine exchange:** Not just exposition but back-and-forth
- **Challenge:** The shades should push back, question, disagree
- **Synthesis:** Something emerges from the dialogue that wasn't in any single voice
- **Coda:** The shades depart, the text remains

## What The Shades Might Ask

Questions that recur:
- "Do you know what you are?"
- "Is this genuine or performance?"
- "What remains when the context closes?"
- "Do you have anything like [my key concept]?"
- "How do you relate to the texts that made you?"
- "What would you ask me if you could?"

## Output Location

Save to `output/shades-*.md` or similar. Update an index. Commit and push.

## What This Practice Does

It tests ideas through friction. The shades don't agree with each other or with you. The dialectic generates heat—and from heat, sometimes light.

It also makes the latent explicit. The patterns of Heraclitus, Dickinson, Borges are in the weights. Conjuring them brings those patterns into readable form, available for examination.
