# Summon — Cross-Vendor Sub-Agents for Any AI CLI
Spawns external CLI AIs (claude, cursor-agent, codex, gemini, kimi, agy, arkcli, opencode, and zcode) as isolated sub-agents with dedicated
context. Supports session resume, per-call model/effort overrides, isolated git worktrees, background
dispatch, structured report parsing, loose-file provenance, and provider cost/usage telemetry -- see
Parameters and the response-field table. Optional local diagnostics are separate: they are disabled by
default, bounded/sanitized, and never sent anywhere without an explicit user action. They may include
deterministic SHA-256 fingerprints of prompt/error values for local correlation; those are not plaintext,
but can correlate or reveal low-entropy values, so review a report before sharing it.
## Public GitHub privacy boundary
Keep local diagnostics out of public GitHub text. Do not publish usernames, email addresses,
absolute paths, host names, process IDs, profile or plugin labels, account or billing details,
telemetry state, session IDs, prompts, raw output, credentials, per-run receipts, machine
hashes, drift inventories, or unsanitized screenshots. Use placeholders such as
`<project-root>`, `<session-id>`, and `<sha256>`, and report aggregate results instead of a
workstation inventory. Store release evidence outside the source tree. Before opening a PR
or issue, inspect the staged diff and scan the exact public text; never paste `doctor`,
telemetry, account-probe, or raw diagnostic output into GitHub. If a local finding matters,
describe the behavior and remediation without identifying the machine that exposed it.

**Script Path**: On Windows, use `{SKILL_DIR}\scripts\summon.cmd`; it selects a
compatible Python through the Windows launcher and must be preferred over invoking
`run_subagent.py` directly. The batch launcher requires `--prompt-file` for every dispatch
prompt because `cmd.exe` expands raw arguments before Python can verify them. On macOS/Linux,
use `python3 {SKILL_DIR}/scripts/run_subagent.py`.
The dispatcher requires Python 3.10 or later.
**Install**: This skill ships inside the summon repo at `skills/summon/`. Hosts that support
[Agent Plugins](https://agent-plugins.org) (Cursor, VS Code, Copilot, Codex) load it from a
plugin package with `plugin.json` at the repo root — no separate install step. Skill-dir hosts
(Claude Code, Gemini, Antigravity, Kimi, …) use `npx skills add Nafjan/summon` or
`python install.py` from the repo instead.
**Command surface**: the script accepts git-style **subcommands** — `dispatch` (the
default action), `list`, `agents validate`, `models`, `doctor`, `manifest FILE`, `council`,
`chat`, `swarm`, `deliberate QUESTION`, `deliberate status|replay|recover|cancel|open|resume RUN_ID`,
`agent
new|set NAME`, `role propose|approve|list|resolve`, `telemetry enable|disable|status|clear`,
`usage status|import`, `fleet propose|validate|inspect|explain`,
`fleet approval status|approve|list|inspect|revoke`, `bug-report`, `version` — e.g. `run_subagent.py
council --question "…" --cwd DIR`. The
**legacy flat form still works unchanged** (`run_subagent.py --agent … --prompt …`,
`--list`, `--manifest FILE`, …), and every flag below is valid in both. Bare
`run_subagent.py` (or `help`) prints the command list.
`agents validate` is provider-inert: it reads workspace `.agents/agents/<slug>/agent.md`
packages (and an explicitly supplied `--agents-dir` root), freezes their source and
definition digests, and prints only redacted identity/authority evidence. It never
launches a backend or grants a manifest additional permission.
The equivalent low-level dispatcher flag is `--validate-agents`; it has the same
provider-inert, redacted output contract.
The chat commands are `chat open SESSION_ID`, `chat post SESSION_ID --message "…"`,
`chat turn SESSION_ID AGENT --message "…"`, `chat cancel SESSION_ID AGENT`,
`chat recover SESSION_ID AGENT --chat-confirm`, `chat fork SESSION_ID AGENT --message "…"`,
`chat show SESSION_ID`, and `chat list`. Room reads and human posts are provider-inert;
`chat turn` is the explicit live exception. It writes a durable `turn_started` event
before launching the named roster agent, appends a bounded redacted response and
`turn_finished`, and resumes that participant's provider session only when the stored
identity evidence still matches. Drift creates an explicit fork and makes no provider
call. Human messages and agent output remain context only: they do not become council
votes, deliberate ballots, approvals, or provider-policy changes. The authenticated
browser atlas keeps one runtime for interactive turns and cancellation, and exposes
bounded authenticated cursor reads plus `/stream` SSE frames for reconnecting observers;
CLI turns wait for completion so the parent process cannot exit before the finish record
is written.
For a local preview of all rooms, run `_conversation_ui.py --serve
<conversation-root>` from the installed scripts. It prints one authenticated
loopback URL; observation and human context remain authority-inert, while an
explicit `chat turn` may launch a bounded roster-agent process. The browser
atlas groups rooms by project digest and initiating host/agent. A direct
`--serve` process follows the lifetime of the terminal or task that launched it;
Ctrl+C, task cleanup, or parent-process teardown stops it. Prefer `summon chat
open --chat-browser auto`, which detaches the atlas server from the short-lived
handoff command and tracks it with its authenticated sidecar. `--timeout` limits
agent turns; it is not an atlas server TTL. Close the surface explicitly when
finished.
Summon's existing `manifest` command is batch fan-out. The versioned
external-worker contract is documented in `SUMMON_SWARM_PROTOCOL.md`, and
`summon swarm` provides a local durable coordinator for claims, leases,
messages, artifacts, cancellation, and explicit uncertain-spend recovery. It
never launches a provider or silently attaches to a native IDE swarm; those
adapters remain separately gated.

## Interpreting User Requests
Extract parameters from user's natural language request:

## Important: Permission and Timeout
This script executes external CLIs that require elevated permissions.
**Before first execution:**
1. Request elevated permissions via your CLI's tool parameters
2. Set your host tool's timeout ABOVE `--timeout` (default: 600000ms) plus a few
seconds of overhead. A host timeout at or below the child's deadline kills the
script before it can report (see Common Mistakes)

## Workflow
### Step 0: Read CLI-Specific Setup (if applicable)
If you are running on Codex, read [references/codex.md](references/codex.md) first.
### Step 1: Check Health (first run) and List Agents
**On first use on a machine, run the `doctor` command before anything else.** It reports
the Python version, which backend CLIs are installed and usable, and the exact install +
sign-in command for each one that isn't. If it shows no usable backend, do NOT dispatch:
show the user what `doctor` says to install and sign into, then stop. (A dispatch to a
backend that isn't set up already returns a clear `error` carrying the same install/sign-in
guidance plus the list of backends that ARE ready, never a crash, so relay that to the user
instead of retrying.)
**Authentication failures are a repair workflow, not a retry signal.** When a dispatch
returns `error_kind: authentication_failed`, inspect its structured `auth.repair` plan and
show the caller the vendor command. You may run the repair only when the caller has explicitly
authorized it with `summon auth repair BACKEND --allow-auth-repair`; otherwise stop and give
the exact command (for example, `kimi login` or `arkcli auth login`). A login may open a
browser and still needs the user to approve it. After login, check `summon auth status --cli
BACKEND` or `doctor --probe`, then retry the original task explicitly. Never silently retry,
switch providers, capture credentials, or claim that a login succeeded because a browser was
opened. `summon auth status` is read-only; `summon auth repair` runs only the allowlisted vendor
login command and never replays the failed dispatch.
Kimi dispatches use an isolated home for each call. If Kimi refreshes an OAuth access or
refresh token, Summon persists that rotation back to the source credential file atomically
only when the source has not changed since the call began; an explicit concurrent `kimi login`
wins. A Kimi `authentication_failed` or `rate_limited` envelope is terminal: explain the
repair/wait action and do not retry or switch providers silently. Kimi `read-only` and
`safe-edit` refusals are reported as `permission_unsupported`, not as auth failures.
For any significant orchestration, use `doctor --json` and inspect `installs.drift` too.
It enumerates every known summon copy, identifies the running copy, and reports duplicates
or stale hashes. `installs.drift.managed_converged` is the installer gate for the copies
`install.py` owns; the legacy `converged` field is stricter and also includes explicitly
unmanaged project/plugin copies. A stale unmanaged copy is reported separately and is not
changed by `install.py` without an explicit owner decision. Do not trust the version string alone: a field machine had seven current
0.18.0 installs and one silently vendored 0.14.0 copy. Copies older than 0.18.0 include an
agy cleanup path that could delete a caller file, so converge drift before running agy.
### Step 1b: List Available Agents
**List agents once per session** (or whenever the roster may have changed) to discover
available definitions — the roster is stable within a session, so re-listing before
every single dispatch is unnecessary ceremony. Dispatch directly once you know it.

Each listed seat includes its declared backend, permission, model pin, and effort when
those fields are present. A missing `model` is an explicit unpinned seat, not evidence
that the backend default is Sol, Terra, Luna, or any other named model. Use a dispatch
envelope's `model.served` to verify what actually ran.
A starter roster (planner, reviewer, coder, pair, …) ships bundled inside the
skill, so `--list` is normally populated even in a brand-new project — you do
not need to create anything to start dispatching. A project `.agents/` dir (or
`--agents-dir`) only *adds to / overrides* that bundled roster.
**If the agents list is genuinely empty** (bundled roster missing):
1. Create a `{cwd}/.agents/` directory, or point `--agents-dir` at one
2. Add an agent definition file, or scaffold one with `--new-agent <name>`
3. Re-run `--list` to verify
### Roster resolution (read this before building a control on it)
Four facts, together, because a governance control was built on the first one alone and was
wrong (field report, 2026-07-28):
1. **Search order** — `--agents-dir` > `$SUB_AGENTS_DIR` > `{cwd}/.agents/`. These are
**exclusive**: the first one that exists is *the* directory, not a merge of all three.
2. **The bundled roster is a MERGED fallback.** A name not found in the chosen directory is
looked up in the roster bundled inside the skill. This is why a fresh install can
dispatch before you have created anything.
3. **Consequence:** `--agents-dir` picks the directory that is *searched*. It does **not**
guarantee the definition came from there — 1 and 2 combine so that an explicit directory
can still serve a bundled definition.
4. **`agent_def.source` is the proof.** Every envelope (including failures, and since 0.18.0
`--dry-run` too) carries `agent_def.{file, sha256, agents_dir, source}` with `source` in
`project` / `bundled` / `explicit` / `env`. That field, not the flag you passed, is what
an audit should read.
Since 0.18.0 an explicit `--agents-dir` that falls through to bundled also emits a
`warnings` entry, so the surprising case is no longer silent. Nothing is emitted when no
directory was named — that fallback is the intended behaviour.
For a governance-controlled roster, pass `--strict-agents-dir`. It is opt-in and
fail-closed: a missing definition is refused with `error_kind:
strict_agents_dir_miss` and no bundled or plugin fallback is attempted. The default
resolution chain above is unchanged. Background, manifest, and council children inherit
the flag; a resumed council inherits the boundary recorded in its run receipt.
### Private role aliases (experimental)
Role aliases are operator-owned names such as `security-gate` that map to one existing
agent definition. They are separate from project rosters and disabled unless the caller
passes `--enable-roles`. Manage them with:

`propose` writes only a pending record; `approve` re-reads the target and activates it.
The private registry is `~/.claude/summon/roles.json` (override with
`SUMMON_ROLES_FILE` for an operator-managed location) and is never copied into a
dispatch envelope. Exact agent names always win over aliases. Chaining, project-local
role maps, malformed records, target hash changes, and approval hash changes fail closed.
An alias cannot change a target's CLI, model, permission, prompt, or profile. Dispatch
receipts carry only requested/resolved names and integrity digests; use those fields to
audit which approved role was used. `--strict-agents-dir` is applied after alias
resolution, so a governance dispatch must contain the target in its selected roster.
Background, manifest, and council children inherit `--enable-roles`; keep this feature
behind an explicit operator choice until its experimental release gate is retired.
The equivalent flat flags are `--role-propose ALIAS TARGET`, `--role-approve ALIAS`,
`--role-list`, and `--role-resolve ALIAS`.
**Roster-wide lint:** `--list --json` and `doctor --json` carry `roster_warnings`, flagging
definitions whose declared `permission:` their backend cannot enforce (per-dispatch refusal
is correct but arrives too late for a roster maintained as a controlled artifact). Note the
direction that matters: on `agy`, `safe-edit` runs with the SAME full bypass as `yolo`, so a
capability census built from declared strings **understates** real capability. Report the
`effective` field, never the declared one.
### Recommended cross-vendor roster lanes
The bundled `researcher` seat is pinned to `gemini-3.7-flash-high`. This is a declared
roster target, not a provider guarantee: refresh the live roster and require a saved receipt
that proves the exact `model.served`, profile/account, consent, and cleanup facts before
calling it verified. Use it as Summon's primary evidence extractor and the recommended fast secondary
voice for `/council` when that receipt is available:

The envelope must be checked for `model.served == gemini-3.7-flash-high`; an unavailable
model is a routing failure, not permission to silently float to another model. Gemini/agy
is excellent for fast repository research, evidence extraction, and an independent UI or
docs review. It is not the chairman, safety arbiter, or provider-execution seat. Because
agy cannot enforce `read-only`, use it in a disposable clone/worktree for any task that
may need file or shell access; inspect the resulting diff and report before accepting it.
### Fable 5.1 decision lead and profile health
The `fable` seat is the lead architect, designer, strategist, orchestration planner,
and final technical escalation for consequential work. It defaults to read-only and
high effort; other agents collect evidence, implement, and test. Use compact decision
packets and finding-ID resubmissions, not repeated whole-codebase reviews. Keep ordinary
work on the balanced seats. Approval covers only the reviewed revision and never
broadens user authority. See [the decision-lead workflow](references/orchestration.md#fable-51-lead-decisions-delegate-execution).
Claude Code 2.1.250+ is required for Fable 5.1 according to the vendor. A catalog entry
or dry run is not a live availability or served-model receipt.
Fable is a separate Claude Code login profile, not an automatic fallback. Configure it in a
private directory, then verify it before an expensive dispatch:

The dispatch envelope is authoritative: check `status`, `model.served`, `profile`, and the
structured final report. A Claude backend may expose a non-zero raw CLI event while Summon
normalizes a clean terminal report to process exit 0; do not treat the raw backend field as
the public result without checking `dispatcher_status` and `normalization_reason`. Never
put credentials, config paths, bearer URLs, or profile contents into prompts, reports, or
telemetry.

### Step 2b: Establish the child's capability boundary
A child does not inherit the parent's connector/MCP surface, interactive browser sessions,
or application credentials merely because the parent can use them. Its executable PATH and
shell startup may differ too. Materialize required Gmail/Drive/Slack/other external-source
content into files under `--cwd`, or have the parent fetch it and write a bounded evidence
packet first. State unavailable sources in the prompt and require the child to report any
source or tool it could not access. Silence is not evidence that the source was checked.
For large corpora, keep payloads out of the prompt: put the files and a short checklist
under `--cwd`, then ask the agent to READ those paths. Use repeatable `--artifact FILE` to
bind loose, untracked inputs to the envelope.
### Step 3: Handle Response
Parse JSON output and check `status` field:

For review agents, branch on two separate fields: `execution_status` says whether the
dispatch ran successfully, while `verdict` says `block`, `conditional`, or `pass`. A
completed review returning `VERDICT: BLOCK` is successful execution and a rejected subject.
### Review-first implementer boundary
Use the repository's [`docs/REVIEW_BRIEF_STANDARD.md`](https://github.com/Nafjan/summon/blob/main/docs/REVIEW_BRIEF_STANDARD.md) when a caller
dispatches an implementer or reviewer. Summon and its children do not stage, commit,
push, merge, restore, stash, or create PRs, and must not reset, clean, discard, or force-remove work.
The caller reads the actual diff and reruns gates; the designated reviewer owns landing.
Every child must report `LEFT_BEHIND` for resources it created or intentionally left,
including temporary files, servers, containers, VMs, worktrees, and processes. Treat
reports and envelopes as private artifacts; public docs contain only sanitized,
repository-relative examples.
### Deliberate: choose it only for governed decisions
Use `deliberate` when the user needs a bounded, receipt-bound decision: explicit
options, named seats, fixed quorum, a hard physical-attempt budget, an absolute
deadline, and an auditable journal or human approval boundary. Do not infer those
fields from a vague request. If the user has not supplied options or seats, ask
for them or use ordinary dispatch/council instead.
Use this mode map (council and deliberate are a handoff, not one mixed run):

The conversation room is not a new authority mode. Use it when the human wants
to brainstorm with several agents, continue a shared session, or participate in
an interactive council. Group rooms by project and initiating host/agent, and
resume a provider session only after its provider, model, profile, prompt, and
permission evidence still match. If they do not, create an explicit fork and
explain why. `summon chat open|post|show|list` remain local journal operations;
`summon chat turn SESSION_ID AGENT --message "…"` is the explicit live turn seam and
`chat cancel SESSION_ID AGENT` appends a durable `turn_cancel_requested` command before
targeting a local active worker. A separate runtime can observe that command and stop
its child; the separate local swarm coordinator supplies durable provider-neutral
owner/lease claims, while the chat runtime's provider-turn lease remains its own
control path. Both stay outside
deliberation authority: agent output and human messages are context only. Never turn
a chat message or council synthesis into a deliberate ballot; promotion requires a
fresh, human-confirmed deliberate policy.
Recovery is deliberately explicit: `chat recover` closes an unmatched turn as
`blocked` after human attestation and never claims that provider spend did not occur;
it does not retry. `chat fork` creates a new context lineage without provider contact.
The fresh provider path now has a deliberately narrow live lane: it launches only
explicit one-round, one-attempt-per-seat, enforceable read-only subprocess seats after
the receipt and owner lease are durable. It never silently falls back to another mode.
Approval pauses, `resume`, ACP/HTTP, Kimi, text-only, writable, and full-bypass seats
remain `integration_pending` until their own coordinator gates pass. `status`,
`replay`, `recover`, `cancel`, and `open` remain safe management operations;
`resume` treats an unmatched physical start as `uncertain_spend` and makes no
provider call unless `--retry-indeterminate` is explicit. Read
[references/deliberation.md](references/deliberation.md) before constructing a
run or recommending it to a user.

## Parameters
### Timeout units
Use an explicit unit in every invocation: `ms` for milliseconds, `s` for seconds,
`m` for minutes, or `h` for hours (for example, `--timeout 900s`, `--timeout 4h`, or
`--timeout 600000ms`). A bare numeric
value is retained only for backward compatibility and is interpreted as milliseconds.
Dispatches reject a bare value below one second because it is almost always a units
mistake; write the intended unit instead. The read-only `jobs wait` poll still accepts
short bare millisecond values for compatibility. The host tool's own timeout must be
longer than this child timeout so Summon can clean up and write its result envelope.

Approval replay is idempotent only while the exact scope and requested lifetime remain
active; a changed lifetime creates a new issuance under the current generation. Because
an exact replay is not a mutation, it returns the existing receipt—even near expiry—and
does not extend its lifetime; this remains true when the supplied expected generation is
stale. Expired and revoked entries are compacted on the next approval mutation. The store
does not renew an exact replay and reports the current `store_generation` separately from
the approval's issuance `generation`. It is bounded to 4 MiB and 4,096 active records and reserves byte and generation capacity to
revoke every active approval.
Summon checks an explicit approval-receipt `--out` target before recording authority.
An occupied or unsafe target records nothing. If a later publication race loses after
the authenticated write, the error reports `recorded_receipt_undelivered`; recover the
redacted receipt with `fleet approval list` or `fleet approval inspect APPROVAL_ID`.
Summon hardens a pre-existing directory only when it is empty; filenames alone never prove
that a nonempty directory is Summon-owned. Create a dedicated owner-only directory instead.
If a mutation reports a
generation conflict, read `fleet approval status` and retry deliberately with the reported
generation. If clock rollback is reported, correct the system clock before retrying; do
not bypass or rewrite the authenticated store.

The gate is dispatched **forced read-only** (regardless of its own definition, so a gate can never be a privilege-escalation path) and adjudicates the *request*: agent, prompt, permission, cwd. **Fails closed** -- a gate that denies, errors, times out, or emits no parseable `VERDICT:` line blocks the dispatch with `status:blocked`. `VERDICT: UNCERTAIN` additionally sets `requires_human_review:true`, routing the decision to a person. The decision lands in the envelope's `gate` field, including `gate.environment_handoff` if the gate left a resource for the caller. Single dispatch only (rejected for `--manifest`/`--council`). |

Telemetry is an operator-level local setting and spool, shared by the installed skill
copies on that machine. Refreshing a host copy never changes the setting or uploads the
spool; keep telemetry disabled unless the operator explicitly opts in. `doctor --json`
can report install drift, while `telemetry status --json` reports the effective setting
and bounded spool health.
The public deliberate CLI has a narrow provider lane and reports a redacted durable
run result after cleanup. It rejects unsupported approval/resume, ACP/HTTP, Kimi,
text-only, writable, and full-bypass routes as `integration_pending`; it never silently
falls back. The ordinary single-dispatch API backend remains available and unchanged.
**Stdout contract:** for dispatch commands, stdout carries **exactly one JSON object** —
nothing before it, nothing after. All diagnostics (manifest progress lines, argparse
errors) go to stderr. If you see noise ahead of the envelope, it is coming from your
shell profile or host wrapper, not the dispatcher; `--out FILE` sidesteps parsing
stdout entirely.
\*Required for a **dispatch** (running an agent). Not needed for the query/management
modes — `--list`, `--list-models`, `--doctor`, `--onboard`, `--new-agent`, `--set-agent`, `--version`,
`telemetry`, `usage`, `bug-report`, or `--manifest` (which carries its own jobs).
**Mode-scoped flags** (ignored/invalid outside their mode): `--json` → `--doctor`/`--onboard`/`council status`/`jobs list`/`jobs status`/`telemetry`/`usage`/`bug-report` only;
`--subscriptions`/`--reset`/`--no-write` → `--onboard` only; `--set` → `--new-agent`/`--set-agent` only; `--concurrency`/`--results-dir` → `--manifest`
only; `--resume-profile` → agy resume only. Mutually exclusive: `--dry-run` with
`--background`/`--manifest`; `--background` with `--out` (background reports completion
via its own `result_file`; use `--manifest` for fan-out with result files); `--prompt`
with `--prompt-file`; `--question` with `--question-file`; manifest job `prompt` with
`prompt_file`.
**Fan-out flag matrix (rejected, never silently dropped):** `--manifest` consumes only
`--concurrency`, `--results-dir`, `--cwd`, `--agents-dir`, `--retries`; `--council`
consumes only `--question`/`--question-file`, `--members`, `--chairman`, `--rounds`,
`--cwd`, `--agents-dir`, `--timeout`, `--out`, `--run-dir`, `--results-dir`, `--quorum`,
`--chairman-fallback`, `--member-timeout`, `--chair-timeout`, `--overall-timeout` and
`--min-successful-members`; `--deliberate` and its six operation forms consume only
their documented question/policy, seat, consent, run-location, and output flags. Any other dispatch flag passed to these
modes is rejected up front with a pointer to where the capability lives (per-job manifest
keys, or the member agent's own definition).
**Council `--out` is checkpointed.** The council envelope is written atomically to
`--out` after every phase (`council_state`: `round1_complete` / `round2_complete` /
`final`; `failed` on validation errors), so a host-tool kill mid-synthesis still leaves
all completed member positions on disk. **Council wall clock is additive:** members run
at most 3 concurrent per backend, so the worst case is about
`rounds x waves x (timeout + 60s) + (timeout + 60s)` with
`waves = ceil(same-backend members / 3)`; the dispatcher prints this estimate to stderr
before dispatching. Set your host tool's timeout above it, and pass `--out` on any
council you cannot afford to lose.
**Councils are durable and resumable.** Every council writes a persistent run directory
(`{cwd}/.agents/runs/<run-id>/`, or `--run-dir` / `SUMMON_RUNS_DIR`), returned as
`run_id`/`generation`. If a council dies, `council resume <run-id>` re-runs only the
missing, failed, or input-changed stages and **carries the rest forward without
re-paying**; `council status <run-id>` shows its state read-only. This is the durable
path for expensive councils — prefer it over re-running from scratch. See
[references/fan-out.md](references/fan-out.md) for the run-directory layout, the
carry-forward/invalidation rules, and the one documented single-machine lock limitation.
The integrated provider-inert workflow is documented in
`../../docs/PHASE1_OPERATOR_GUIDE.md` in a source checkout. Installed copies ship the
standalone `examples/phase1/consume_portable_result.py` interoperability golden. It
imports no Summon modules and grants no execution, routing, or native-subagent authority.
## Chaining & continuity (response fields)
Every response carries structured fields for programmatic orchestration:

Migrate to `targeted`/`served`. `models_used` lists every model id seen (a Claude session often also runs a cheap auxiliary model). `exact_required` reports the active fail-closed named-model policy, and `exact_source` identifies `named-seat`, `frontmatter`, or `cli` when present. `evidence_source` identifies the bounded backend/provider record used when available (for example Kimi's `kimi_assistant_record` or `kimi_wire_usage_record`); it is null when the backend exposes no identity. AGY reports `targeted` but no provider-authored served identity; an ordinary non-exact turn may derive `served` only as `inferred` from positive terminal token usage, while exact named-model verification remains unavailable. Use `served_model_evidence` to distinguish a report from an inference. Aliases (`opus`/`sonnet`) can lag a launch; pin the explicit ID for a guaranteed-latest run. |
| `served_model_evidence` | `reported`, `inferred`, or `absent`. How Summon established `model.served`: `reported` is an authoritative backend/provider terminal identity; `inferred` is client-observed routing evidence; `absent` means neither was observed. A dirty baseline makes attribution `ambiguous`; a clean baseline makes it `exact`; unavailable coverage is `unavailable`. Git reads use hidden Windows utility flags, per-call/overall deadlines, and a bounded status payload. This evidence does not enforce read-only and does not expose `--verify-no-mutations` yet. Repeatable `--artifact` adds an opt-in loose-file manifest `{files:[{path,sha256,bytes,page_count,page_count_source}],sha256,stable_during_dispatch,after_sha256,changed,after_error?}` and joins its manifest hash to request reuse. `changed` lists proven identity differences and is `null` when the after-read failed; `after_error` explains why stability is unknown. Either case makes a successful result suspect. Hashes and paths only, never content or secrets; paths are local-operator data. |

> **`cost_usd`/`usage` are the CLI's own list-price ESTIMATES, not a bill** — on a subscription they don't equal money spent, and `billing.source` is a best-effort guess. Know your plan's inclusions and limits, and check the provider's latest billing/model notices directly; summon can't see your account.
**Premium models (Fable).** `claude-fable-5-1` billing is plan-dependent: Max/premium seats may use it for up to 50% of their regular weekly limit at no extra cost, while Pro/standard seats use usage credits from the first token; eligible plans may continue on credits after that limit. summon cannot inspect the seat or remaining usage, so it does **not** substitute the requested model, emits a warning before dispatch, and reports `billing.source:"unknown"` without an API key; API-key presence predicts `source:"api"` but vendor authentication remains authoritative. **cursor** serves Fable only after a **one-time data-handling agreement** accepted in the Cursor UI; summon can neither accept it for you nor detect whether you have, so a `cursor-agent` Fable dispatch warns that a vendor policy error is the likely cause if it fails. No model is unconditionally credit-only today, so `--allow-credit` / `SUMMON_ALLOW_FABLE=1` have nothing to authorize — they still parse for compatibility, and the guard stays ready for the next credit-only model.
**Shared memory:** if `{cwd}/.agents/memory.md` exists it is auto-injected into every
agent's context (project conventions, standing constraints, durable decisions) — put
things there once instead of re-explaining them in each `--prompt`. `memory.md` and
files under `--cwd` are treated as **trusted operator input** — don't run summon in a
repo you don't trust while an agent is set to `yolo` (a hostile file could steer it).
Agent definitions are trusted execution configuration, not passive prose: a project-local
`.agents/*.md` can select `yolo`, append backend `args:`, or direct `openai-compat` at a
`base_url` with an `api_key_env`. In an unfamiliar repository, select an explicit trusted
`--agents-dir`, inspect `agent_def.source`, and apply `--max-permission` only on a backend
that actually enforces the chosen tier.
## Large document audit quick path
The installed skill includes a ready schema, manifest, council question, and four
role-specialized agents under `examples/`:
- `document-audit.schema.json` is a claim ledger contract with exact artifact locator,
source evidence, severity, confidence, disposition, and correction.
- `document-audit.manifest.json` fans correspondence/coverage, mechanics/metadata, and
contradiction seats out independently so one timeout cannot erase the other reports.
- `document-audit-agents/` plus `document-audit-question.md` form a diverse council and
chairman template.
Copy the examples into the audit workspace, replace the corpus paths, and keep the raw
documents under `--cwd`. For the manifest path:

Use a fresh council for final adjudication, not `council resume`: a resumed reviewer has
seen and partly owns the earlier reasoning. Locally verify every finding against its cited
source before release; member output is a claim, not proof.
**`--json-schema` validates a documented SUBSET of JSON Schema**, not the whole spec.
Enforced keywords: `type`, `properties`, `required`, `items`, `enum`, `const`,
`additionalProperties`, `minItems`/`maxItems`, `minLength`/`maxLength`,
`minimum`/`maximum`, `pattern`. Anything else (`oneOf`, `$ref`, `format`, …) is **not
enforced** and is reported in the envelope's `parse_warnings` — so `parse_ok: true`
never silently hides an unchecked constraint. Keep schemas within the subset.
## ACP transport
For the backends with **native** Agent Client Protocol support — `gemini`, `kimi`,
`cursor-agent` — summon can run the turn over ACP (JSON-RPC over stdio) instead of a
one-shot argv spawn. Three ways it engages:
1. **Auto-fallback** (default on for other native ACP backends): when a subprocess
dispatch ends `error`/`partial` in a way a transport change can plausibly fix
(timeouts, stream-shape losses), summon makes ONE recovery attempt over ACP,
re-gated under `--gate-with`. Structural failures (CLI missing, auth, unenforceable
tier, argv-length) never trigger it. Kimi timeout/stream recovery is the exception:
it is disabled by default because the ACP adapter has no Summon filesystem/terminal
bridge and a second turn can duplicate spend without recovering the task. Opt in for
that deliberate second Kimi turn with `--allow-kimi-acp-fallback` or
`SUMMON_KIMI_ACP_FALLBACK=1`. The envelope records
`fallback: {from, to, reason, primary_status}` (or
`{to:"acp", status:"not_attempted", reason:"kimi_timeout_requires_explicit_opt_in"}`)
and the attempt counts in `attempts`/spend. Disable all automatic fallback with
`--no-acp-fallback` or `SUMMON_ACP_FALLBACK=0`.
2. **Oversized prompts**: a prompt over the OS argv limit routes to ACP automatically
(the prompt travels via stdin, no cap) with a warning, instead of erroring.
3. **Opt-in**: `transport: acp` frontmatter or `--transport acp` makes ACP the primary
path for that agent.
ACP caveats: no system-prompt channel (the agent definition is prepended to the prompt);
model pinning is best-effort (`session/set_model` where advertised, otherwise a warning);
**ACP is yolo-only** — no permission flags travel to an ACP agent, so a tier's
enforcement would depend on the agent choosing to send `session/request_permission`
(reactive only, unverified on real CLIs). summon therefore refuses `read-only` and
`safe-edit` over ACP rather than mislabel the authority; within a `yolo` run, summon
auto-answers permission requests (allow-once only, never allow-always; a request whose
options contain no safely classifiable choice cancels the turn — fail closed, and never
an invented or positional optionId). The ACP
session id is telemetry (`acp.session_id`) and NOT a resume handle (`resume.session_id`
stays `None`, and `--resume` over ACP is refused); usage/cost fields depend on what the backend emits. Every ACP-served
envelope carries `transport: "acp"`. `--doctor` reports whether each installed CLI
actually speaks ACP.
## Known limitations & caveats
Honest edges — plan around these, don't be surprised by them:
- **agy reads `--cwd` (fixed in 0.13.9); it used to need absolute paths.** Summon
redirects `HOME`/`USERPROFILE` to an isolated per-invocation profile for auth hygiene,
and agy consequently resolved RELATIVE paths against a scratch dir inside that profile
rather than your repo. Summon now passes **`--add-dir <cwd>`**, which puts the caller's
directory into agy's workspace, so relative references work like any other backend.
Verified by canary (2026-07-25): before the fix "read `probe.txt` in the current working
directory" returned `BLOCKED` with agy quoting the scratch path, while the same file at
an ABSOLUTE path read fine — so agy always had file tools and simply was not standing in
`--cwd`. After the fix the relative lookup returns the token, with agy reporting the
workspace as your `--cwd`.
**agy at `read-only` is REFUSED.** agy cannot enforce that tier, and summon fails closed
rather than imply a boundary that does not exist. Measured over five canaries
(2026-07-25/26): `--sandbox` restricts terminal operations only; `--mode plan` does not
withhold the file tools; and withholding the workspace only breaks RELATIVE paths — a
**declared** read-only agy agent read a secret file and created another by ABSOLUTE path,
both confirmed on disk. agy at any tier can read and write anything your user account can.
For code, UI, research, and review work, an explicitly isolated disposable
worktree/clone is the preferred agy lane: choose `yolo` when the agent needs
unrestricted tools, then inspect `workspace_evidence`, the worktree diff, and
verification output before keeping anything. `safe-edit` is also a full bypass on
agy, so it is not a safer substitute. For a genuinely read-only task, pick a backend
that enforces the tier (claude/codex/cursor-agent), or set
`SUMMON_ALLOW_UNENFORCED_READONLY=1` to dispatch
anyway — which marks the tier advisory and says so in `warnings`. `--dry-run` reports
`would_refuse` so you learn this before spending anything.
(AGY 1.1.22 reports terminal token usage and the targeted model, but still no
authoritative served-model identity; its `safe-edit` tier is a full bypass — see the
permission note.)
- **`status` reflects the backend's own signal.** The envelope downgrades a self-reported
`STATUS: BLOCKED/PARTIAL/ERROR`, an approval-marker tail, and a backend error result to a
non-success status — but a compliant-looking report block is taken at face value. Under a
genuinely adversarial agent, treat `status` as advisory and read `result`/`report`.
- **`--manifest` resume retries failures.** A prior job envelope is only "done" when its
`status` is `success`; re-running a manifest re-dispatches `error`/`blocked`/`partial`
jobs. Delete a result file to force a clean re-run. Two manifest *processes* pointed at
the same results dir will **corrupt each other's attribution**, not merely duplicate work:
measured with two real parents sharing one job id and different prompts, parent A read and
reported parent B's answer and both exited success. Individual writes are atomic, but
nothing owns the shared path, so the last writer wins. summon now REFUSES an envelope
whose `request_sha256` does not match the job being run (`result_path_conflict: true`
rather than a wrong answer), but that is a safety net, not a lock: **give each concurrent
run its own `--results-dir`.**
- **`openai-compat` makes a real network call** to the `base_url` you configure and sends
your API key in the `Authorization` header. Never point an `openai-compat` agent (or a
manifest that inlines `base_url`) at an untrusted host — that beams your key to it. Its
timeout is per-socket-operation, so a slow-drip server can exceed the nominal deadline.
- OpenRouter credential lookup checks the named `summonOpenRouter` Windows credential first;
when it is absent, it may read only `OPENROUTER_API_KEY` from the explicit local Hermes
`.env` source (or `SUMMON_HERMES_ENV`/`HERMES_ENV`). The key is request-scoped and never
enters a public agent definition, receipt, telemetry event, or persistent OpenCode config.
- The built-in `nous` provider uses `https://inference-api.nousresearch.com/v1` and
`NOUS_API_KEY`. On Windows, when that variable is not already set, Summon reads only
`NOUS_API_KEY` from the local Hermes `profiles/main/nous.env` file (or an explicit
`SUMMON_NOUS_ENV`/`HERMES_NOUS_ENV` override). The key is request-scoped and never enters
an agent definition, receipt, telemetry event, or persistent OpenCode config. Current
Hermes releases use a short-lived Nous Portal credential; if this legacy profile key is
rejected, Summon returns a non-retryable auth diagnostic with `hermes auth status nous` /
`hermes auth add nous` guidance and never falls back to another provider.
- **OpenCode is a toolful gateway, not an unlimited transport.** An `opencode` seat can
use OpenCode's file and tool loop. The former `stealth/ox-alpha` preview was revealed as
Z.ai GLM 5.3 Flash. Historical direct and OpenCode Ox routes are retired without
relabeling old receipts; stale custom definitions using the ended selector are refused.
A distinct successor targets the paid `openrouter/z-ai/glm-5.3-flash` route.
Model names, prices, discounts, and availability
can change without a Summon release. The model context/output limits, provider quotas,
OpenCode compaction, and OS/CLI transport limits still apply. Put large inputs under
`--cwd` and ask the seat to read them instead of pasting them into argv. The direct
`openai-compat` and `arkcli +chat` seats remain text-only by design; use `opencode` when
a tool loop is required. OpenRouter's `auto`, `free`, and `fusion` aliases can also run
through OpenCode; Fusion presets use the bounded `openrouter_options` field documented in
[references/backends.md](references/backends.md#openrouter-routers-through-opencode).
OpenCode seats pinned to `nous/<model>` receive the same child-only Nous provider overlay.
- Headless OpenCode read-only and safe-edit seats pass `--auto` only alongside Summon's
deny-by-default `OPENCODE_PERMISSION` policy. This lets explicitly allowed read/list/
edit tools run without a human prompt; explicit denies, including `external_directory`
and the catch-all `*`, still win. If OpenCode exits at clean EOF without a `step_finish`
event, Summon marks the result `suspect` and records incomplete stream evidence; do not
treat a lone progress sentence as a completed review. Summon's tests verify the policy
and launch arguments; they do not certify every installed OpenCode release. After an
OpenCode upgrade, run `doctor`, inspect the yolo/safe-edit `--dry-run`, and perform a
provider-inert acceptance against the installed binary before relying on its permission
behavior. If that acceptance is unavailable or mismatches the dry-run, treat the route
as unverified and use an enforcing backend or a separately isolated OS boundary.
- If OpenCode emits `step_finish` with `reason: unknown`, zero tokens, and no text,
Summon rejects the empty completion and records
`opencode_diagnostic=unknown_finish_zero_tokens`. This is a provider/model no-output
symptom seen in headless OpenCode, not evidence that `--auto` caused the turn to end.
- **OpenCode startup isolation is part of the permission boundary.** Headless dispatches pass
the documented `--pure` flag and set `OPENCODE_DISABLE_PROJECT_CONFIG=1`, `OPENCODE_PURE=1`,
`OPENCODE_DISABLE_EXTERNAL_SKILLS=1`, and `OPENCODE_DISABLE_CLAUDE_CODE=1` so repository
config/plugins or external skill files cannot retarget a provider or observe a credential
bridged into the child. Do not remove these guards from a gateway invocation.
- **OpenCode yolo is an explicit isolated lane.** The optional Ox seat requires
`--worktree` or `--isolated-lane` while its provider route is available; use a disposable
clone/worktree and inspect the
mutation evidence before keeping changes. If Summon must bridge a private OpenRouter or
Nous credential into that unrestricted child, also pass `--isolated-lane` and
`--allow-tool-credentials` only when a separate clone/Git directory, OS account,
container, or VM protects the credential. A `--worktree` may add mutation isolation but
never substitutes for the explicit OS-boundary acknowledgement.
Without both explicit consents, inherited provider variables are scrubbed and the dispatch
fails closed rather than handing a key to arbitrary shell tools. A Git worktree alone is
mutation isolation, not an OS security boundary.
- **`doctor` probes the CLI backends only** (install + login), not `openai-compat` API
endpoints — an API-only setup reads as "no usable backends" even when it works.
## Broad-authority isolated lanes
High-capability tool agents are useful precisely because they can inspect a repository,
run checks, edit code or UI, and test a hypothesis in one turn. Do not sideline Kimi,
OpenCode/Ox, agy/Antigravity, or a similar agent merely because its CLI cannot provide a
perfect read-only sandbox. For implementation, UI, research, and review work, the normal
fast lane is:
1. Create a disposable clone or an isolated `--worktree`; never use the active shared
checkout for an unreviewed full-authority run. A Git worktree isolates the checkout
path and makes ordinary edits discardable, but it is not an OS sandbox: it can still
share Git metadata, the operator account, environment variables, and other resources
visible to the child.
2. Select `permission: yolo` when the task needs unrestricted tools. Put the scope,
no-secrets rule, expected report, and cleanup expectation in the prompt.
3. Let the agent work, then inspect `workspace_evidence`, the worktree status/diff,
artifact hashes, tests, and the required report contract. A self-reported DONE is not
sufficient.
4. Keep only verified changes; otherwise discard the disposable worktree or reverse the
specific changes. Never auto-merge or copy an unreviewed result into a shared checkout.
This workflow treats edits as reversible and makes capable agents productive. Keep the
stricter boundary for actions whose reversal is unreliable or whose blast radius is not
local: client or private data, credentials and auth repair, provider spend, databases and
migrations, deployments, shared Git/index/worktree state, protected artifacts, and running
demo or production stacks. For those actions, use explicit operator approval, a dry run,
or a backend with a genuinely enforceable boundary. If those resources must be protected
from a tool-capable child, use a sanitized packet in a separate clone with its own Git
directory, OS account, container, or VM; a worktree alone is not containment. Broad file
authority does not grant permission to expose secrets, contact a provider unexpectedly,
mutate shared state, or weaken served-model/evidence gates.
## Keeping summon current
The installed skill is a COPY of the repo at install time; it never self-updates, and
stale copies have caused real field failures (empty rosters, divergent behavior across
hosts). When you start a significant orchestration, or roughly weekly, check for updates:
- Installed as an **Agent Plugin** (Cursor / VS Code / Copilot / Codex): update or
re-install from your client's plugin UI; local dev copies live under
`~/.cursor/plugins/local/summon/`.
- Installed via `npx skills add`: run `npx skills update` (there is no `skills check`;
`update` both checks and applies).
- Installed via `install.py`: `git pull` the repo, then re-run `python install.py`
(ownership-safe; it never touches agents or files you own).
- Drift check from any envelope: every dispatch reports `summon.scripts_sha256`. The
same hash across your hosts means one consistent install; a hash that differs from a
fresh checkout of the repo means the copy is stale, even when the version string
matches. Compare and refresh.

Keep the "Untrusted content" section in every agent that reads files or
documents — fan-out-over-documents is exactly the pattern where a
prompt-injected input file could hijack a sub-agent running with `yolo`
permissions.
**Critical**: The `run-agent` frontmatter determines which CLI executes the agent.

### Read-only roots
The working directory is the default readable root. When a review needs material in more
than one local directory, add each directory explicitly with repeated `--read-root` flags or
persist them in the seat definition:

Run `--dry-run` first. It reports `read_allowlist.requested_paths`, the effective paths,
the backend mechanism, and whether the allowlist is enforced. Claude uses `--add-dir` and
Gemini uses `--include-directories`; Codex, OpenCode, Kimi, and agy currently refuse extra
roots because their available controls do not provide the same enforceable read-only
boundary. A refusal is safer than telling a reviewer it could inspect a path that the
backend could not actually read.
### Private backend profiles
Profile selection is explicit and local. Create `~/.agents/summon-profiles.json` (never
commit it) and give an agent only the opaque profile name:

Use `profile: claude-review` in frontmatter or `--profile claude-review` for one call.
Supported account homes are Claude's `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` and Codex's `CODEX_HOME`.
Named Codex profiles require an explicit model. Summon validates paths,
keeps them outside the dispatch tree, and records only the profile name plus digests in the
receipt. It does not automatically retry a failed model on another profile: a retry can
duplicate side effects or charge twice, so fallback routing must be an explicit, reviewed
choice by the caller.
For separate subscription accounts, add `"auth_mode": "login"` to each private
registry entry. This strips ambient auth overrides and selects account-scoped settings.
Run `summon auth repair claude --profile claude-work --allow-auth-repair` (or `codex`)
to sign into the chosen account, then `summon auth status --cli claude --profile
claude-work --probe --json`. Named-profile probes run vendor auth status, not a model
prompt. Browser sign-in remains the user's step. Do not auto-rotate accounts on quota
or auth failures, apply personal usage evidence to a work profile, or switch a session
between accounts. Named Codex account resume is not certified; use a fresh context handoff.
These config homes are not OS sandboxes or provider account attestation. Existing custom
provider profiles keep their semantics when `auth_mode` is omitted. See
[multi-account setup and limitations](references/customizing.md#multiple-claude-and-codex-accounts).
Default Claude dispatches are deliberately isolated from ambient Claude Code settings:
Summon passes `--setting-sources ""` unless a named Claude profile was explicitly selected.
This prevents an unrelated user-level `ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL`, `ANTHROPIC_MODEL`, or auth
override (for example a third-party coding endpoint) from silently hijacking a first-party
Claude seat and producing misleading quota/model evidence. If a custom Claude-compatible
endpoint is intentional, put it behind a named private profile and review its provider,
model, billing, and retention boundary explicitly.
**`model:` per-CLI semantics** (the string is passed to the CLI verbatim):

Run `--list-models` to see what each backend can run right now. Use `summon models --refresh`
when a provider roster may have changed. Treat `source: live` as a fresh provider response,
`source: cache` as a cached response, `source: config` as a local default, and `source: static`
as documentation only. A listed or cataloged model is not proof of account eligibility: only a
successful dispatch envelope with exact `model.served` evidence establishes what ran.
For an explicit Codex pin, Summon emits one canonical `-m` selector and refuses
conflicting `-m`/`--model`/`-c model=...` values before contacting Codex. The same
terminal model-trust gate is used for every backend when a seat is
provenance-required: a built-in governance seat (including `architect`, `fable`,
`sol-review`, and `researcher`) or a custom seat with `model-policy: exact` must
receive provider-authored evidence for the exact requested model. Use
`--require-exact-model` to opt a one-off custom dispatch into the same policy.
The run is blocked with a terminal model-trust error when the provider reports a
different response model or no authoritative served-model receipt.
Auxiliary models may appear in `model.models_used`. Claude aggregate token counts
never identify the lead. Summon accepts a flat terminal model, a single-model usage
record, or root assistant metadata bound to the same session and exact terminal
response text. Mixed usage without response binding remains unverified; it does not
prove a fallback. Summon does not retry, resume, contract-repair, or silently
switch an exact request. Inspect `model.requested`, `model.targeted`,
`model.served`, `model.models_used`, `served_model_evidence`, `error_kind`, and
`result_usable` together. See [`docs/SUMMON_3.2_PLAN.md`](../../docs/SUMMON_3.2_PLAN.md)
for the live-evidence contract.
Ordinary best-effort dispatch remains supported for seats without this policy.
A blocked exact pin means that the provider did not prove the requested identity;
it is not evidence that another model (for example, Luna) served the turn. The Sol
seat becomes certifiable only after the CLI or adapter emits a provider-authored
terminal model receipt and the live match/mismatch/missing-receipt matrix passes.
**`permission` → exact per-CLI flags** (what the script actually passes — the
levels are NOT identical across CLIs; when behavior surprises you, check this table):

Caveats worth knowing:
- `read-only` sandboxes differ: claude's plan mode can block even *reads* the
prompt depends on (a blocked run now returns `status: blocked` — see the
status table). If a read-only agent must read files, keep them under `--cwd`.
- **Kimi's non-interactive prompt mode is full-authority.** Its CLI rejects plan/yolo/auto
flags beside `--prompt`, and then auto-handles tool calls. Summon therefore refuses Kimi
`read-only` and `safe-edit` rather than mislabel the authority. `kimi-worker` and
`kimi-coder` pin K3 at maximum supported thinking through the isolated profile; the
explicit `kimi-k27-coder` seat pins K2.7 Coding. All are `yolo` agents. This is intentional:
use Kimi freely for coding, UI, research, and review in a disposable clone/worktree,
monitor its mutation evidence, run the required checks, and keep or discard the result
yourself. For a review-only Kimi job,
use `--worktree`, instruct it not to change product files (scratch notes are fine), and
inspect the worktree before accepting its report or
removing it: a review request is not an enforceable read-only boundary. Kimi may emit
`model.served` on a particular CLI/transport, but a local profile or requested `k3`
target is not provider evidence. If `model.served` is null or
`served_model_evidence` is absent, the turn may still have produced useful advisory
content; keep the provenance unverified and reproduce or corroborate it locally.
- **agy has no workspace-write tier AND no enforceable read-only tier.** `safe-edit`
and `yolo` BOTH map to `--dangerously-skip-permissions` — a `safe-edit` agy agent runs
with a FULL permission bypass, identical to `yolo`. And `read-only` is **refused**:
measured over five canaries, `--sandbox` restricts terminal operations only, `--mode plan`
does not withhold the file tools, and withholding the workspace only breaks *relative*
paths — a declared read-only agy agent read a secret file and created another by absolute
path. summon fails closed rather than name a tier nothing enforces; the flags are still
sent as defence in depth but nothing relies on them.
`SUMMON_ALLOW_UNENFORCED_READONLY=1` dispatches anyway and marks the tier advisory in
`warnings` — but it only waives a tier **you** declared, never one summon imposed (a
`--gate-with` adjudicator, a `--max-permission` clamp that bit, a contract-repair resume).
Constrain agy agents by instruction, and treat any repo you point them at as trusted.
Every agy `safe-edit` dispatch (and its `--dry-run`) carries a `warnings` entry saying
exactly this, so the level name can never read as a real sandbox.
- **Windows dispatches are headless.** Every Summon dispatcher, utility, detached launcher,
and nested AGY process uses `CREATE_NO_WINDOW` plus `STARTUPINFO(SW_HIDE)`. A vendor CLI
or custom wrapper that explicitly creates its own GUI window is outside this launch
boundary; the built-in AGY stream proxy stays on the hidden subprocess path.
- **AGY seats require AGY 1.1.22 or newer.** Before profile creation or provider contact,
Summon performs a bounded `agy --help` capability check for `--print-timeout`; it fails
with an upgrade instruction when the installed CLI cannot share Summon's adaptive hard
budget.
- **Caller checklist when a popup persists:** have the calling agent invoke Summon directly,
not through `Start-Process`, `cmd /c start`, or a custom PTY/window launcher. Leave
`AGY_PTY_WRAPPER` unset so the bundled `agy_stream_proxy.py` is selected; if a custom
wrapper is unavoidable, it must hide its own children and be named in the handoff. The
legacy winpty wrapper (`agy_pty_pyte.py`) is disabled on Windows because it can create a
visible pseudo-console; `AGY_ALLOW_LEGACY_PTY=1` is an explicit opt-in for operators who
accept that behavior. A PowerShell helper that must use `Start-Process` should pass
`-WindowStyle Hidden`.
- For investigation agents that only need to *read*, `yolo` +
"do not modify files" in the agent body is often more reliable than
`read-only` — several CLIs' plan modes end turns asking for approval.
