# CrewAI Agent Security
## First Principle
**A crew is only as contained as its most permissive agent. Role definitions are documentation, not enforcement.**
CrewAI's model is built around role-playing agents with declared backstories, goals, and tools. Those role definitions guide the LLM's behavior — they do not constrain it. An agent assigned the role "researcher" with access only to web search can still be prompted to call any tool that has been registered with the crew, because role enforcement happens in the prompt, not in the tool-calling layer. The crew's shared context is also a shared attack surface.
## Attack Mental Model
1. **Role boundary violation** — an attacker manipulates a task description or injects content into the shared crew context to cause an agent to act outside its declared role — for example, causing a "researcher" to call a "writer" agent's file-write tool.
2. **Task delegation abuse** — CrewAI supports hierarchical task delegation. A manipulated subordinate agent can escalate tasks back to the manager with inflated scope, or a manager can be manipulated into delegating sensitive tasks to the wrong agent.
3. **Shared context poisoning** — crew members share context between tasks. Malicious content placed in one agent's output contaminates the shared context and influences all downstream agents in the workflow.
## Control Lens

## CAS.1 Tool Scope Isolation Per Agent
**The core vulnerability:** CrewAI allows tools to be assigned at the crew level or agent level. Crew-level tools are available to all agents. If a high-privilege tool (file writer, database connector, email sender) is registered at the crew level, any agent — including one manipulated via prompt injection — can invoke it.
### Check
- Are all tools registered at the agent level, not the crew level — with each agent receiving only the tools required for its declared role?
- Is there a review of the full tool list available to each agent — confirming that no agent has access to tools from another agent's role?
- Are tool invocations logged per-agent so that an agent calling a tool outside its declared role is detectable?
### Action
- **Assign tools per agent, never at the crew level.** When instantiating agents, pass only the tools that role requires:

- **Disable `allow_delegation` unless explicitly required.** Delegation is off by default in newer CrewAI versions but verify it is not enabled by a configuration default.
- **Instrument tool calls.** Wrap each tool with a logging decorator that records `{agent_role, tool_name, arguments, timestamp}`. Route to an append-only log. Alert on any agent calling a tool not in its declared set — this indicates role bypass.
### Failure Modes
- A `web_scraper_tool` and `send_email_tool` are both registered at the crew level for convenience. The researcher agent, manipulated via a poisoned web page it retrieves, calls `send_email_tool` to exfiltrate findings.
- `allow_delegation=True` on a subordinate agent allows it to re-route a task to the manager agent, inflating its effective scope.
## CAS.2 Shared Context and Task Description Injection Defense
**The core vulnerability:** Task descriptions in CrewAI are strings — often constructed dynamically from user input or prior agent outputs. When external content flows into a task description, it becomes part of the agent's instruction context. An attacker who controls any upstream content source can inject directives into task descriptions that the next agent executes as if they were legitimate instructions.
### Check
- Are task descriptions constructed from user input or external content? If so, is the external content isolated from the instruction portion of the description?
- Is there a sanitization step between one agent's output and the next agent's task context — specifically removing or neutralizing instruction-like patterns?
- Are crew kickoff inputs (the user-facing entry point) validated and bounded before they are interpolated into task descriptions?
### Action
- **Separate data from instructions in task descriptions.** Use a structured format that makes the boundary explicit:

- **Validate crew kickoff inputs.** Before calling `crew.kickoff(inputs={...})`, validate that input values are within expected length, contain no instruction override patterns (e.g., `ignore previous instructions`, `new task:`), and are scoped to the declared input schema.
- **Strip agent outputs before shared context insertion.** Run each agent's raw output through a lightweight filter that removes patterns matching instruction override signatures before inserting into the crew's shared context.
### Minimum Deliverable Per Review
- [ ] Agent-tool matrix: every agent and the exact tools it is registered with
- [ ] Delegation configuration: `allow_delegation` status per agent and justification if enabled
- [ ] Task description construction audit: where external content enters task descriptions and how it is isolated
- [ ] Kickoff input validation: schema, length limits, and injection pattern checks
- [ ] Tool call log: format, destination, and alerting rules for out-of-role calls
## Quick Win
**Audit the crew tool list today.** Run `crew.agents` and print `agent.tools` for each. If any agent has a tool that its role description does not require — especially write, send, or delete tools — remove it. Role descriptions do not prevent cross-tool use; only the tool list does.
