# Apply Ten-Bagger Strategy
Construct a growth-oriented portfolio expecting most positions to underperform, be flat, or fail outright, while deliberately searching for the small number of positions capable of multiplying ten times over — evaluating the strategy's success on the whole portfolio's asymmetry, not on each individual position's win rate.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Adopted by:** Peter Lynch popularized the "ten-bagger" concept (a stock that returns ten times its purchase price) in "One Up on Wall Street" (1989), describing it as a central goal of his approach at Fidelity's Magellan Fund — where a relatively small number of outsized winners among a much larger number of positions drove a disproportionate share of the fund's overall returns during his tenure. This asymmetric-return portfolio philosophy is now standard content in growth-investing education, distinct from strategies that expect a more uniform distribution of individual-position outcomes.
**Impact:** In a portfolio built around ten-bagger search, a single position that returns 10x can offset the complete loss of several other positions and still leave the overall portfolio meaningfully ahead — meaning the strategy should be judged by its aggregate, asymmetric outcome, not by the proportion of individual positions that "worked." A portfolio manager or individual investor evaluating this kind of strategy by win rate alone (e.g., "most of my picks didn't do much") is applying the wrong success metric to a strategy explicitly designed around a small number of outsized winners.

### Step 1: Identify candidate characteristics associated with ten-bagger potential
Look for small or mid-cap companies (large, established companies rarely multiply ten times over simply due to their already-large size) with a long runway for growth (a large addressable market still substantially unpenetrated), a simple, explainable business model, and — often — a company that is currently overlooked or under-covered by institutional analysts, since heavy existing coverage and ownership typically means the growth story is already reflected in the price.
### Step 2: Source candidates through direct observation, then apply full research
Everyday consumer or professional observation (see `apply-everyday-observation-sourcing`) is a legitimate way to surface ten-bagger candidates before they become widely followed — but candidate identification through observation must be followed by the same rigorous research (financials, category classification via `apply-stock-categorization-framework`, growth-adjusted valuation via `calculate-peg-ratio`) as any other investment decision.
### Step 3: Size positions expecting a meaningfully asymmetric portfolio outcome
Because most candidates in a ten-bagger-oriented portfolio will underperform, be flat, or fail, size individual positions so that this expected high failure rate doesn't threaten the portfolio as a whole, while still allowing genuine winners room to make a meaningful difference to overall returns if they play out. The relevant question when volatility occurs is whether the underlying growth thesis (expansion into new markets, unit economics, competitive position) remains intact, not whether the price has moved uncomfortably in the short term.
### Step 5: Resist selling a genuine ten-bagger candidate too early after a moderate gain
A common failure mode is selling a stock that's delivered a solid but moderate gain (e.g., doubling) simply because that gain feels satisfying to lock in, when the underlying growth story that could still produce a much larger eventual return remains intact. Distinguish between selling because the thesis has actually changed (a legitimate exit) and selling because a moderate gain feels good to realize (forfeiting the larger asymmetric payoff the whole strategy is built around).

- Evaluate the strategy's success on the whole portfolio's aggregate, asymmetric outcome — not on the proportion of individual positions that performed well.

## Examples
**Portfolio-level asymmetry playing out:** An investor builds a growth-oriented portfolio of 15 small and mid-cap companies meeting the ten-bagger candidate criteria. Over several years, roughly a third of the positions underperform or are sold at a loss, roughly half deliver modest or flat returns, and two positions multiply several times over — the aggregate portfolio outcome is strongly positive, driven almost entirely by the two outsized winners, exactly the asymmetric pattern the strategy is designed around.
**Resisting an early sell:** A position an investor identified as a ten-bagger candidate has doubled in price after two years, and the temptation to lock in the gain is strong.
