Recognize that existing visible status attracts further resources, credit, and opportunity at a rate disproportionate to the actual merit differential behind it — and use this deliberately, either by concentrating effort on achieving an early, visible credibility signal, or by explicitly correcting for it when allocating resources or credit across candidates of genuinely similar underlying quality.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** This is not simply "success breeds success" as a vague truism — Merton's original finding is a specific, measured distortion: when credit or resources are allocated based partly on existing visibility, the allocation compounds disproportionately to the already-visible party even when the underlying merit differential between them and a less visible peer is small or absent. Because the mechanism operates on visibility itself, not directly on merit, it creates two distinct, actionable implications: it is exploitable (a small, genuine early credibility signal can be leveraged into outsized future opportunity) and it is correctable (allocators who know the mechanism can explicitly check for it and avoid defaulting resources toward existing visibility alone).
**Merton (1968):** Studying credit attribution in scientific collaboration, Merton found that when multiple scientists of different existing prominence collaborated on a discovery, the already-eminent scientist consistently received a disproportionate share of the credit and public attribution relative to their less-known collaborators, even when contribution to the actual work was comparable.
