# VENCircuit: Von Economo Neurons in Recurrent SNNs
Methodology from arXiv:2605.17399 — "Von Economo neurons enable reliable social skill acquisition in recurrent spiking neural networks: a computational account with clinical predictions" by Esila Keskin (University of the West of England, Bristol, UK).
## Overview
Von Economo neurons (VENs) are large, fast-projecting bipolar cells concentrated in the anterior cingulate and fronto-insular cortex. They are selectively lost in behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and reduced in autism spectrum conditions (ASC). This paper provides the first computational account of VENs as **acquisition scaffolds** — not necessary for performing learned tasks, but critical for reliable learning.
## Key Findings
- VENs constitute only **2%** of neurons (K=40 out of N=2,000) yet confer a **21-fold increase** in training convergence odds (OR=21.0, 95% CI 2.7–167, p=8.7e-5)
- VEN-intact networks: **98%** convergence (49/50); VEN-ablated: **70%** (35/50)
- Failed ablated networks show **complete absence of learning** (never above chance), not slower learning
- Phase-ablation experiments: VEN removal most disruptive during **mid-training (epochs 5–25)** — co-adaptive dependency forms in pyramidal circuit
- **Acquisition vs expression asymmetry**: VENs critical for learning, dispensable for performance after training
- Inference-time VEN ablation: heterogeneous effects — 16/20 networks unchanged, one catastrophic collapse (0.989→0.620)
## Network Architecture (The VENCircuit)
### Components
- **Pyramidal population**: N=2,000 LIF neurons, recurrent connections (W_pp, sparse Bernoulli mask p=0.15)
- **VEN population**: K=40 (2%), fast-projecting bipolar cells, no recurrent input from pyramidal
- **Output layer**: Winner-take-all (WTA) with C=2 LIF neurons
- **Input**: Burst-modulated Poisson spike statistics (binary classification proxy)
### Key Design Features
- VENs provide a **direct gradient pathway** immune to Jacobian product instabilities in the recurrent circuit
- VENs do NOT receive recurrent input — bypasses Jacobian entirely
- Membrane time constants: τ_pyr=20ms (β=0.95), τ_VEN=5ms (β=0.80)
- Pyramidal gradient factor α = β_pyr + γ·||W_pp^(0)||₂ ≈ 1.028 (near critical boundary)
- ATan surrogate gradient for spike non-differentiability
### Theoretical Analysis
- VEN pathway provides **O(1) gradient** (Proposition 2): ∂L/∂W_vo = (∂L/∂ŷ)·v̄̄, no Jacobian product
- Pyramidal pathway attenuates via recurrent Jacobian factors: ∂L/∂W_pp ≈ β·(I - α·P)^(-1)·g
- Networks initialize near α=1 boundary — all seeds indistinguishable by spectral norm (0.077–0.079)
### Clinical Predictions
- **Developmental VEN reduction (ASC analog)**: Stochastic learning failure — variable social skill acquisition
- **Adult VEN loss (bvFTD analog)**: Heterogeneous performance effects — from no change to catastrophic collapse
- **Acquisition asymmetry**: Timing of VEN loss determines failure mode
