# SpikingNav: Robust Embodied Navigation with Spiking Neural Policies
## Overview
SpikingNav is a spiking neural network framework for robust indoor embodied navigation that addresses the limitations of traditional Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based navigation models. While ANNs achieve strong performance under clean conditions, they often degrade significantly under visual corruptions and rely on dense computation that is unsuitable for resource-constrained platforms.
SpikingNav leverages the intrinsic properties of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs):
- **Event-driven computation**: Reduces computational load by processing only changes in input
- **Intrinsic temporal dynamics**: Maintains state through membrane integration and spike-triggered reset
- **Energy efficiency**: Lower per-step computation compared to ANNs
- **Robustness**: Better performance under visual corruptions
## Architecture
### Spiking Sensing Encoder (SSE)
- Extracts task-conditioned visual features using a spike-based backbone
- Converts continuous visual input into sparse spike trains
- Provides compact representation suitable for downstream policy network
### Spiking Policy Network (SPN)
- Maintains recurrent policy state through membrane integration, thresholding, and spike-triggered reset
- Implements decision-making through spike-based temporal dynamics
- Enables sequential decision making from egocentric observations
## Key Benefits
1. **Competitive Clean Performance**: Achieves comparable results to ANN baselines under clean conditions
2. **Enhanced Robustness**: Significantly better performance under visual corruptions
- ObjectNav success improved from 31.05% to 34.12%
- Average success under visual corruptions increased from 8.45% to 13.71%
3. **Resource Efficiency**: Fewer parameters and lower per-step computation
4. **Hardware Deployability**: Validated on Thruster-V2 neuromorphic chip for real-world cyber-physical systems
## Implementation Guidelines
### Training Setup
- Use standard PointNav and ObjectNav benchmarks for evaluation
- Train under both clean observations and various visual corruption types
- Implement membrane potential dynamics with appropriate time constants
- Consider hardware constraints during architecture design
### Deployment Considerations
- Optimize for neuromorphic hardware platforms (e.g., Thruster-V2)
- Ensure compatibility with event-based sensors when available
- Balance spike sparsity with navigation performance requirements
- Validate robustness across different corruption types
## Evaluation Metrics
- **Success Rate**: Percentage of episodes completed successfully
- **Success Weighted by Path Length (SPL)**: Measures efficiency of successful trajectories
- **Robustness Score**: Average performance across multiple visual corruption types
- **Computational Efficiency**: Parameters count and FLOPs per inference step
- **Energy Consumption**: When deployed on neuromorphic hardware
