# Quantum Network Routing
Methodology for routing quantum information through noisy quantum networks using surface code error correction. Based on arXiv:2606.12781.
## Core Problem
Quantum networks face:
- Channel noise and erasure errors
- Decoherence during transmission
- Need for both reliability and efficiency
- Two paradigms: entanglement-based (teleportation) vs. direct transmission
## Surface Code-Based Routing Architecture
### Key Components
1. **Physical Layer**: Quantum channels (fiber/satellite) with noise models
2. **Error Correction Layer**: Surface code QEC at each node
3. **Routing Layer**: Path selection with QEC-aware metrics
4. **Entanglement Layer**: Bell pair distribution and purification
### Routing Strategies
#### Entanglement-Based Routing
1. Distribute Bell pairs along path (entanglement swapping)
2. Purify entanglement at intermediate nodes
3. Teleport quantum state using shared entanglement
4. Apply surface code correction at destination
#### Direct Transmission Routing
1. Encode quantum state in surface code
2. Transmit encoded qubits through channel
3. Decode and correct errors at each hop
4. Re-encode if errors exceed threshold
### QEC-Aware Routing Metrics
1. **Logical Error Rate**: Estimated after QEC at each hop
2. **Channel Fidelity**: Measured via tomography or benchmarking
3. **Code Distance**: Surface code distance needed for target reliability
4. **Resource Overhead**: Physical qubits per logical qubit
## Implementation Steps
1. Characterize channel noise (depolarizing, erasure, dephasing)
2. Select surface code distance based on noise level
3. Compute routing path minimizing logical error rate
4. Deploy QEC at each intermediate node
5. Monitor syndrome data for error rate estimation
6. Adapt routing dynamically based on real-time noise
## Surface Code Parameters
- **Code Distance d**: Determines error suppression (~ (p/p_th)^((d+1)/2))
- **Threshold p_th**: ~1% for depolarizing noise
- **Physical Qubit Overhead**: ~d² per logical qubit
- **Syndrome Measurement**: Continuous error detection
## Pitfalls
- **Error propagation**: QEC can spread errors if syndrome measurement is noisy
- **Latency**: Surface code correction adds delay to routing
- **Resource scaling**: High code distances require many physical qubits
- **Synchronization**: Entanglement swapping requires precise timing
- **Memory coherence**: Stored qubits decohere while waiting for routing
