# NOPE - Non-Selfishness Graph Coarsening
## Trigger Words
graph coarsening, non-selfishness graph, NOPE graph, graph dimensionality reduction, graph simplification, efficient GNN preprocessing
## Core Idea
Graph coarsening constructs smaller graphs while preserving essential structural and semantic properties. Most existing methods rely on pair-wise similarity matching where each node independently searches for its best partner. This selfish matching paradigm incurs substantial computational and memory overhead. NOPE shifts to a non-selfishness principle that prioritizes collective neighborhood interference in coarsening.
## Key Patterns
### 1. Non-Selfishness Principle
- Prioritizes collective interference of neighborhood over individual node matching
- Each node considers its impact on the entire neighborhood during coarsening
- Contrasts with selfish matching where nodes independently optimize their own pairing
### 2. NOPE Algorithm
- Linear memory consumption O(n)
- Near-linear computational complexity in number of nodes
- Derives interference evaluation across the neighborhood collectively
### 3. NOPE* Fast Variant
- Reduces O(delta * d) interference evaluation to O(d) based on local isotropy assumption
- Alleviates computational bottleneck for high-degree nodes
- 1.8-10x speedup over NOPE
- 1-3 orders of magnitude acceleration over baselines
- Surpasses almost all baselines while learning on coarsened graphs yields comparable or superior performance
## Performance
- Learning on coarsened graphs yields comparable performance to original graphs
- Can show superior performance over LLM-based graph reasoning owing to compact graph information

## When to Apply
- Large graph processing where full graph is computationally prohibitive
- GNN preprocessing for faster training on large graphs
- Graph dimensionality reduction while preserving structural properties
- Scenarios where pairwise matching is too slow for graph scale
