Neuromodulation-based control architecture for dynamically reconfiguring rhythmic patterns in central pattern generators (CPGs) with fixed connectivity. Uses targeted neuromodulatory inputs to enable rapid, localized rhythmic transitions without structural plasticity. Applicable to: CPG control, rhythmic motor pattern generation, neuromodulation modeling, degenerate network dynamics, biological locomotion control, respiratory rhythm control, or dynamical systems analysis of neural circuits.

# Neuromodulation-Based Rhythmic Pattern Control
Control architecture for rapid rhythmic pattern transitions in CPGs using neuromodulation instead of structural plasticity.
## Core Insight
Synaptic plasticity is too slow for rapid rhythmic transitions (breathing changes, gait switching). Neuromodulation provides fast reconfiguration of fixed-connectivity networks by altering neuronal excitability and synaptic efficacy.
## Mathematical Framework
### CPG Model
```python
def cpg_dynamics(x, params, neuromod):
"""CPG with neuromodulatory control."""
dx = params['intrinsic'] @ x + params['coupling'] @ f(x)
dx += neuromod['excitability'] * g(x) # Modulate excitability
dx += neuromod['synaptic_gain'] * h(x) # Modulate synaptic strength
return dx
```
### Control Strategy
1. Identify target rhythmic pattern (frequency, phase, amplitude)
2. Compute required neuromodulatory vector
3. Apply targeted modulation to specific neuron groups
4. Verify transition via bifurcation analysis
### Bifurcation Analysis
```python
from scipy.integrate import solve_ivp
def analyze_transitions(cpg_params, modulation_range):
"""Track how rhythms change with neuromodulation strength."""
for mod_strength in modulation_range:
sol = solve_ivp(cpg_dynamics, [0, 100], x0, args=(cpg_params, mod_strength))
freq = extract_frequency(sol.y)
phase = extract_phase_relation(sol.y)
```
