# γ_c-Peak: Covariant Recovery on Organic Qubit Platforms
## Context
This paper extends the covariant quantum error correction (CQEC) framework to four organic qubit platforms relevant to quantum biology: cryptochrome (CRY), monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), Posner molecules, and general radical-pair systems. It identifies a critical decoherence rate threshold γ_c at which covariant recovery transitions from effective to collapsed — the "γ_c-Peak" — and maps this threshold across platforms.
## Core Methodology
1. **Platform characterization**: Each organic qubit platform has distinct coherence properties:
- **Cryptochrome (CRY)**: T₂ ≈ 52 ms (nuclear), T₂ᵉ ≈ 0.53 ns (electron), hyperfine A ≈ 200 MHz
- **MAO-A**: T₂ ≈ 3.2 ms (nuclear), T₂ᵉ ≈ 1.1 ns (electron), identical hyperfine coupling
- **Posner molecules**: ³¹P nuclear spins in Ca₉(PO₄)₆ clusters, T₂ estimated > 100 ms
- **General radical pairs**: Variable T₂ depending on molecular environment
2. **Decoherence rate mapping**: Map each platform's T₂ gap onto simulation decoherence rate:
γ_veto = T₂_gap / (2 × T_sim)
where T_sim = 200 ms (Schultze-Kraft veto window for behavioral relevance).
3. **CQEC protocol**: Apply approximate covariant QEC — a purification protocol constrained by the Eastin-Knill theorem — using the three-layer architecture:
- Layer 1: Nuclear spin memory (³¹P)
- Layer 2: Electron spin interface
- Layer 3: Classical electrochemistry
4. **γ_c-Peak identification**: The critical decoherence rate γ_c marks the transition where:
- γ < γ_c: CQEC maintains coherence > 0.6 (quantum oscillatory dynamics preserved)
- γ > γ_c: Coherence collapses to < 0.05 regardless of CQEC strength
## Key Results
- CRY at γ_veto = 0.19: CQEC maintains coherence 0.83 (×6.9 improvement over uncorrected)
- MAO-A at γ_veto = 3.08: Coherence collapses to 0.012 even with CQEC
- T₂ = 26 ms (half CRY estimate): CQEC-protected coherence remains 0.69
- Layer-protein tradeoff: no single protein optimizes both nuclear and electron layers
## Implementation Steps
1. Parameterize each platform's spin Hamiltonian from ab initio calculations or PDB data.
2. Map T₂ gaps to simulation decoherence rates using the γ_veto formula.
3. Implement the three-layer CQEC protocol with platform-specific parameters.
4. Simulate coherence dynamics over the 200 ms veto window.
5. Identify γ_c for each platform by sweeping decoherence rates.
6. Perform T₂ sensitivity analysis (halve, double estimates) to confirm robustness.
7. Compare CQEC results against classical Markov baseline to verify quantum nature.
## Pitfalls
- **Layer-protein tradeoff**: A protein with excellent nuclear T₂ may have poor electron T₂. CRY has better nuclear coherence but worse electron coherence than MAO-A. Design requires balancing both layers.
- **State preparation challenges**: The framework assumes initialized quantum states, but biological state preparation mechanisms remain unresolved.
- **Entanglement distribution**: Even with maintained coherence, distributing entanglement across neural distances is a separate unsolved challenge.
- **Classical baseline verification**: Always include a classical Markov baseline — it produces only monotonic relaxation, confirming that oscillatory dynamics from CQEC are genuinely quantum.
## Verification
- CQEC-protected coherence should be > 0.6 for platforms with T₂ > 25 ms.
- Classical Markov baseline should show monotonic decay without oscillations.
- γ_c-Peak should be sharp: coherence drops from > 0.6 to < 0.05 within a narrow γ range.
- T₂ sensitivity: halving the T₂ estimate should still yield coherence > 0.5 if baseline T₂ is sufficient.
