# AI Science Benchmarking
Methodology for designing and evaluating AI scientific capabilities through domain-specific benchmarks. Based on Anthropic's BioMysteryBench (Apr 29, 2026).
## Core Challenges in Evaluating AI for Science
Scientific research, particularly biology, has properties that make it especially hard to evaluate:
1. **Multiple valid approaches**: Many different "right" ways to answer a research question depending on skills, resources, and research taste
2. **Subjective researcher decisions**: Individual choices in noisy datasets can lead to entirely different conclusions
3. **Open-ended problems**: Real scientific work involves messy, open-ended problems unlike well-defined benchmarks
4. **Rapidly improving AI**: Benchmarks must avoid ceiling effects as models improve
## Benchmark Design Principles
### Multi-Step Reasoning
- Tasks requiring sequential analytical steps, not single-hop Q&A
- Real-world scientific workflows (read papers → query databases → run experiments → code → analyze)
### Convergent Validation
- Compare results across independent benchmarks (BioMysteryBench + CompBioBench + BLADE + BixBench + SciGym)
- Convergent findings from independent benchmarks increase confidence
### Human Expert Baseline
- Comparison against domain experts to calibrate difficulty
- Latest models solved problems that human experts could not
- Sometimes using very different strategies than humans
### Longitudinal Capability Tracking
- Measure improvement trajectory across model versions
- Track diminishing returns and ceiling effects

- **BLADE**: Open-ended data analysis tasks (model checked against human scientist steps)
- **BixBench**: Biological datasets, graded on whether conclusions match scientists'
- **SciGym**: Simulated biology lab — model designs and runs experiments
- **BioMysteryBench**: Real-world bioinformatics datasets with open-ended analysis
## Key Findings
- AI systems show rapidly improving capabilities, approaching/exceeding human experts
- Latest models solved problems that human experts could not
