## When to use
- Combine waste reduction and variation control
- Run DMAIC with Lean tools (VSM, pull)
- Improve speed and quality together
Out of scope: Lean-only (lean) or Six-Sigma-only (six-sigma) work.
## Core principles
1. Lean for speed/flow, Six Sigma for quality/variation — together.
2. Eliminate waste AND reduce variation.
3. Data-driven (DMAIC) with respect for people.
4. Optimize the whole value stream end-to-end.
## Workflow / Process
1. **Clarify** — confirm the goal, constraints, and current state before acting.
2. **Assess** — inspect what exists; find the real problem, not the symptom.
3. **Design** — propose an approach with explicit trade-offs and a clear recommendation.
4. **Execute** — implement in small, verifiable steps using Lean Six Sigma conventions.
5. **Verify** — validate against lead time AND defect/variation both improved and sustained.
## Best practices
- Use VSM to find waste, DMAIC to fix variation.
- Prioritize projects by value and feasibility.
- Validate measurement before improving.
- Build control plans and standard work to sustain.
## Anti-patterns
- Using only one toolkit when both are needed.
- Tool-heavy projects with no business impact.
