## What I do

I execute PLAN.md files phase-by-phase in one of three modes. Pick the mode from the invocation:

## Modes

**This Modes section supersedes any other session-shape framing elsewhere in this document.**

## Shared PLAN contract

All modes parse the same structure:

- **Plan resolution**: explicit path wins; else branch-derived — `feat/GIT-123` → `PLANS/PLAN-GIT-123.md`; `feat/issue-123` / `feat/123` (legacy) → `PLANS/PLAN-GIT-123.md`; `feat/PROJECT-123` (JIRA) → `PLANS/PLAN-PROJECT-123.md`. Missing → stop with the expected path (`--update` gracefully skips instead).
- **Parse**: phases = `^### Phase`; steps = `- [ ] **N.M**`; completed = `- [x]`.
- **Rationale triple**: every atomic step carries `— **Why:**` / `— **Done when:**` / `— **Consumers affected:**` — parse all three. Surface a step's `Consumers affected` BEFORE mutating its target. Verify `Done when` objectively before `[x]` — "looks done" is not done.
- **Read `## Dependency & Consumer Map` before executing** so order and blast radius are known up front.

## Mode `--soft` — interactive execution

**Step 0 — Verbatim playbook discipline (anti-drift):** transcribe the PLAN's steps into the session todolist VERBATIM before any task todos; skipped steps STAY as `skip: <reason>` entries (silent deletion is drift); task todos append after, never interleave; at each phase boundary, diff todolist vs PLAN — every deviation must be a visible `skip:` or a completed step.

**Step 1 — Current state:** first incomplete phase: `awk '/^### Phase/{phase=$0} /^- \[ \]/{print phase; exit}' "$PLAN_FILE"` (awk form is robust to 4-line atomic steps); next step = first `- [ ]`.

**Step 2 — Execute:** (1) surface consumers before mutating; (2) group related steps; (3) delegate — tests → `testing-subagent`, docs → `documentation-subagent`; refactor/clean and build/deploy → directly (`code-review-subagent` is read-only — review only, not implementation); (4) verify each step's `Done when` before `[x]`.

**Step 3 — Auto-update per phase:** when all phase tasks complete + acceptance criteria met + tests pass → run the `--update` mode (checkboxes + semantic commit), confirm applied, next phase.

**Step 4 — Final validation:** `grep "## Acceptance Criteria" -A 20 "$PLAN_FILE" | grep "^- \[ \]"` — empty → done; else list remaining criteria.

**Step 5 — Report:** per phase — branch, PLAN path, phase progress (done/total), recent completions, next steps.

## Mode `--gate` — the automated phase loop

1. **Resolve the plan** (shared contract above).
2. **Discover verification commands ONCE** from project manifests (`package.json` scripts, Makefile, pyproject, Cargo…) into `GATE.lint/.typecheck/.build/.test/.e2e`. Discovery order, pass semantics (incl. the scoped-lint rule), and INCONCLUSIVE handling are defined by `verification-loop-skill` §The gate contract — defer there, don't restate.
3. **Clean baseline**: `git status --porcelain` clean, correct branch (never `main`/`master`), work committed. Dirty tree → commit/stash first (ask if ambiguous).
4. **Per phase, in order:**
   - [guardrail] `phases_done >= MAX_PHASES` (12) or `total_fixes >= MAX_FIXES` (20) → HALT + `[goal:blocked]`
   - 4a. IMPLEMENT — every atomic step; delegate per matrix below; keep a per-step WORK LOG
   - 4b. TEST NEW CODE — new/modified source files (`git diff --name-only --diff-filter=AM`, minus configs/docs/PLAN) get tests (TS: `bar.test.ts` sibling; PY: `tests/foo/test_bar.py`; mirror the nearest existing test). Trivial pure-data additions exempt.
   - 4c. VERIFY — the gate per `verification-loop-skill` §The gate contract (sequence, scoped-lint rule, verdict protocol; E2E per the E2E rule). On green, append the memo line `GATE <short-sha> lint=t typecheck=t build=t unit=t e2e=<t|-|n.a>` to the PLAN trace block (memo format: §Gate memo there).
   - 4d. FIX-ON-FAIL — max 3 attempts per gate step: read full output → root cause → fix → append to WORK LOG → re-run failed step then the whole gate. Each attempt increments `total_fixes`. After 3 failures: STOP — no checkbox, no commit, no push; report blocker + ask user. **Never push red code.**
   - 4e. ON GREEN — tick ALL checkboxes (phase-level, every sub-step, satisfied acceptance criteria) + write the `— Done:` line per step (see Traceability)
   - 4f/4g. COMMIT + PUSH — one atomic commit: phase files + PLAN update together (see Commit + push)
   - 4h. REPORT — one-line phase status, continue

**A phase advances ONLY when its gate is fully green.** Red gate = no checkbox, no Done line, no commit, no push.

### E2E rule

Run e2e ONLY IF both: Playwright configured (`playwright.config.*` + `@playwright/test`) AND the phase touched frontend code (`components/**/*.{tsx,jsx,vue,svelte}`, `app|pages|routes|src/ui`, route handlers affecting rendered pages). Backend-only phase → skip e2e and say so. Frontend but no Playwright → note + skip (never install unprompted). **Visual/responsive scope → spawn `responsive-audit-subagent`** (loads the subagent-only `playwright-responsive-audit-skill`, PTY loop) instead of inline `npx playwright test`.

### Traceability

`— Done:` line per completed step, indented with the Why block:

Rules: `fixes:` MUST list every gate fix for that step; one logical line; only tick `[x]` when `Done when` is objectively satisfied AND the gate passed; note deliberate deviations. A completed phase leaves zero unchecked boxes (`grep -n "^- \[ \]" <PLAN>` within it → empty). Optional hash-trace: two commits (code → hash → checkboxes+Done lines → `docs(plan): trace Phase N (<hash>)`).

### Commit + push

`git add <phase files> PLANS/PLAN-*.md` → `git commit -m "<type>(<scope>): implement Phase N — <summary>" -m "Plan: <file>. Gate: … green. Trace: per-step Done lines."` → `git push`. Conventions per `git-semantic-commits-skill`; project commitlint overrides; never mix style-only with logic. Push rejected (non-FF) → stop and ask, never force-push.

### Final validation

`grep -n "^- \[ \]" <PLAN>` — empty → success. Any residue → report exactly which items are unmet and ask; never fabricate completion.

### Guardrails & Budget (soft, instruction-level — the native loop has none)

Parse overrides from `$ARGUMENTS`; garbage flags ignored. HALT is terminal for the invocation — summarize done/remaining/next step + resume command. `/run-plan` is idempotent (completed phases stay `[x]`).

**Completion markers** (end every run with exactly one block; this is the inter-skill terminal protocol — `worktree-pipeline-skill` halts on `[goal:blocked]`):

`[goal:complete]` only valid right after a non-empty `[goal:evidence]` line. Markers on their own final line(s); `[plan:*]` aliases acceptable without the plugin. Under `/goal`, also close the goal via `update_goal` (complete+evidence / unmet+blocker). Runtime-enforced guardrails only via the goal plugin (`@prevalentware/opencode-goal-plugin`); Docker endpoint plugin-inert until the v2 binary bump (#387).

### Stop conditions

Gate red after 3 attempts → report + ask · phase/fix budget hit → HALT `[goal:blocked]` · unrecoverable error → report + ask · user intervention needed → ask, resume · "stop/pause/halt" → clean stop at phase boundary · protected branch → stop before first commit · all phases complete → final report.

## Mode `--update` — progress sync

### Workflow

1. **Detect branch reference** from `git branch --show-current`: `GIT-123` (preferred), `issue-123` / `123` (legacy), `PROJECT-123` (JIRA).
2. **Find the PLAN file**: `PLANS/PLAN-GIT-{N}.md` for GitHub; `PLANS/PLAN-{ID}.md` for JIRA (e.g. `PLANS/PLAN-IBIS-456.md`). Neither exists → graceful skip (not an error): "No PLAN file found for current branch — continuing without PLAN update."
3. **Analyze recent commits**: `git log ${BASE}..HEAD --oneline`, `git diff --name-only ${BASE}...HEAD`.
4. **Update checkboxes** — rules:
   1. Mark `[ ]` → `[x]` if the related file was modified
   2. Don't uncheck already-completed items
   3. Preserve all other content exactly
   4. **Preserve the atomic-step rationale triple verbatim** — when flipping a `**N.M**` step's checkbox, never strip or rewrite its `**Why:**` / `**Done when:**` / `**Consumers affected:**` lines. Change only `[ ]` → `[x]`.
5. **Add a progress note** for significant milestones (`## Progress Log` with date + summary + files changed).
6. **Commit**: `git add "$PLAN_FILE" && git commit -m "docs(plan): update ${PLAN_FILE##*/} with current progress"`.

### Malformed-step flag primitive

A step using the `**N.M**` marker but missing a rationale line is **malformed** — flag it, don't fix it (the authoring source owns the fix):

This is the reusable primitive `worktree-pipeline-skill` §6d atomicity self-check depends on. Flag behavior: one warning per malformed step (line number + step text); never auto-rewrite or delete.

### Edge cases

- **No PLAN file** → graceful skip.
- **Non-standard checkbox format** → warn, proceed with caution.
- **Unparseable branch** → offer the most recently modified `PLANS/PLAN-*.md` (`find PLANS -name "PLAN-*.md" -mtime -1 | head -1`), confirm before using.

### Do / don't

- **Do**: update before PR creation, after milestones, after refactoring/testing; keep acceptance criteria aligned with actual work.
- **Don't**: uncheck completed items, modify plan structure, remove sections, change the issue reference.

### Bounded-by-default

When protocol is enabled, this skill defaults to `Iterations: 10` (sufficient for typical single-pass workflows). Override with `Iterations: N` for specific tasks. Safety blocks: `.env`, `node_modules/`, `rm -rf`, `git push --force`. Stuck-loop handling: `autoresearch-core-skill/references/stuck-detection.md`.

### Skill-specific override

Under `AUTORESEARCH_PROTOCOL=1`, fix-on-fail honors `Iterations: N` as the bound for gate-fix attempts (replacing the fixed 3) and counts each toward the global fix budget. See `autoresearch-core-skill/references/evaluator-contract.md`.
