## What I do

I create professional Mermaid diagrams from natural language descriptions — no MCP server, no rendering service, zero tool overhead.

1. **Parse Diagram Request**: Analyze the user's description to understand diagram type and structure
2. **Generate Mermaid Syntax**: Create valid Mermaid source code
3. **Embed Inline (default)**: Write a fenced ` ```mermaid ` block directly into the target `.md` file — GitHub, GitLab, and VS Code preview render it natively
4. **Optional File Render**: When a standalone image is required, render via `npx -y @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli` (`mmdc`)
5. **Preserve Sources**: Keep `.mmd` files alongside rendered output when file rendering is used
6. **Handle Complex Diagrams**: Split large diagrams into multiple blocks/files when needed

Supported diagram types:
- Flowcharts (TD, LR, BT, RL)
- Sequence diagrams
- Class diagrams
- State diagrams (v2)
- ER diagrams
- Gantt charts
- Pie charts
- Mind maps
- Git graphs
- User journey
- Timeline

## When to use me

Use this workflow when:
- You need to visualize workflows, processes, or system architecture
- You want Mermaid diagrams for documentation or presentations
- You need to include diagrams in git commits or PLAN files
- You're creating planning documents for GitHub issues or JIRA tickets
- You need to document code logic or system flows visually
- You want diagrams that can be edited later (source `.mmd` files preserved)

## Rendering (no MCP)

**Default — inline block.** For diagrams integrated into Markdown (READMEs, PLAN files, ADRs), write the diagram directly into the `.md` as a fenced code block. GitHub/GitLab/VS Code render it natively; the source stays text (diffable, greppable, zero tokens beyond the diagram itself):

**Optional — standalone file via `mmdc`.** Only when an actual image file is needed (pandoc/LaTeX pipelines, slide decks, contexts that don't render mermaid):

- `mmdc` flags: `-t <theme>` (default/dark/forest/neutral), `-b <background>` (white/transparent), output format inferred from extension (`.svg`/`.png`)
- First `npx` run downloads mermaid-cli (needs Node 18+); rendering uses Puppeteer (headless Chrome)
- Also available: paste the syntax into https://mermaid.live for a quick visual check without any install

## Steps

### Step 1: Analyze the Diagram Request

- Parse the user's description
- Identify the diagram type needed:
  - **Flowchart**: Process flows, decision trees
  - **Sequence**: Message passing, API calls
  - **Class**: Object-oriented structures
  - **State**: State machines, transitions
  - **ER**: Database schemas
  - **Gantt**: Project timelines
  - **Pie**: Data distribution
  - **Mindmap**: Hierarchical concepts
  - **Gitgraph**: Branch visualization
  - **Timeline**: Chronological events
  - **User Journey**: User experience flows

### Step 2: Determine Output Directory

### Step 3: Generate Mermaid Syntax

Create valid Mermaid code following syntax conventions:

### Step 4: Save Mermaid Source File

Always save the `.mmd` source file for future editing:

### Step 5: Deliver the Diagram

**Default — inline**: write the fenced ` ```mermaid ` block directly into the target `.md` (PLAN, README, ADR). No tool calls needed.

**Standalone file** (only when an image file is required):

npx -y @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli -i PLANS/PLAN-GIT-136/architecture.mmd -o PLANS/PLAN-GIT-136/architecture.svg -b white
```

### Step 6: Verify and Report

- Inline: confirm the block is inside the target `.md` and fenced correctly (```mermaid)
- File: verify the rendered output exists and report both `.mmd` source + rendered file paths

## SVG vs PNG

**Default to SVG**. Use PNG only when:
- Embedding in contexts that don't support SVG
- Specific tooling requires raster images

## Handling Large Diagrams

When diagrams exceed rendering limits or become too complex:

1. **Detect complexity**: Count nodes/connections
2. **Offer splitting**: Break into sub-diagrams
3. **Create overview**: High-level summary diagram
4. **Link diagrams**: Reference between files

**Example Split Strategy**:

## Common Issues

### mmdc / Puppeteer / Chrome Issues

**Issue**: Browser-related errors rendering files (Linux headless environments)

**Solution**:

# Install Chrome dependencies (Linux)
sudo apt-get install -y chromium-browser

# Or set Puppeteer to use system Chrome
export PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH=/usr/bin/chromium-browser
```

For Docker, add to Dockerfile:

RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y chromium && rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
```

Note: inline ` ```mermaid ` blocks are unaffected — they render client-side (GitHub/VS Code), no local browser needed.

### Mermaid Syntax Errors

**Issue**: Diagram fails to render

**Solution**:
- Validate syntax with Mermaid Live Editor: https://mermaid.live
- Check for reserved words (use quotes: `["Date"]`)
- Ensure proper indentation
- Verify diagram type declaration

## Best Practices

- **Keep source files**: Always save `.mmd` files for future editing
- **Use descriptive names**: `auth-flow.mmd` not `diagram1.mmd`
- **Default to SVG**: Resolution-independent, smaller, diff-friendly
- **Theme consistency**: Use consistent theme (default, dark, forest, neutral)
- **White background**: Use `backgroundColor: "white"` for better compatibility
- **Organize by PLAN**: Store related diagrams together in PLAN directories
- **Document context**: Include comments in `.mmd` files

## Integration with Planning Workflows

When creating plans for GitHub issues or JIRA tickets, embed the diagram inline in the PLAN.md:

## Troubleshooting Checklist

Before creating the diagram:
- [ ] Output target determined (inline `.md` block vs standalone file)
- [ ] Diagram type is appropriate for the content
- [ ] Mermaid syntax is valid

After creating the diagram:
- [ ] Inline block fenced correctly, or rendered file (.svg/.png) created
- [ ] `.mmd` source preserved when file rendering was used
- [ ] Location/paths reported to user

When protocol is enabled, this skill defaults to `Iterations: 10` (sufficient for typical single-pass workflows). Override with `Iterations: N` for specific tasks. Safety blocks: `.env`, `node_modules/`, `rm -rf`, `git push --force`.
