## What I do

Guide distinctive, production-grade frontend builds that avoid generic "AI slop" aesthetics — from bold direction choice through tokens, typography, motion, to verified code.

## Anti-Patterns to AVOID

NEVER produce generic AI-generated aesthetics.

### The 3 AI Design Clusters (red flags — synced with `uiux-review-skill` axis 13)

| **C — Broadsheet** | Multi-column grid + heavy rules + Times-like serif + justified text | Default "information dense"; news metaphor rarely fits |

If the user requests a cluster explicitly, ask why — no brand reason → pick a different direction.

### Other anti-patterns

- **Fonts**: no Inter/Roboto/Arial/system-ui; vary the display font per build
- **Colors**: no purple-gradient-on-white, no timid pastels, no default Tailwind blue as primary
- **Layouts**: no predictable 3-column card grids, no cookie-cutter heroes
- **Patterns**: no generic gradient backgrounds, no default shadow cards, no rounded-everything
- **Themes**: vary light/dark; never default to the same direction

## Design Direction (before any code)

1. **Purpose**: what problem, who uses it, what emotion.
2. **Tone**: pick a BOLD direction — brutalist, editorial, retro-futuristic, glassmorphism, Swiss, neo-brutalism, etc. Intentionality, not intensity; one conviction-executed direction beats five competing ones.
3. **Constraints**: framework, performance budget, accessibility, browser support, breakpoints.
4. **Signature Element discipline** (adapted from `anthropics/skills/frontend-design`): spend your boldness in ONE place — the one memorable thing. Every other element supports it, never competes. One bold move reads as designed; five read as noise.

## Aesthetics Rules

**Typography** — one expressive display font + one clean body font (contrast is the point). Distinctive sources: Google Fonts (Playfair Display, Instrument Serif, Space Mono, Syne), Fontshare (Clash Display, Satoshi, Panchang). Deliberate modular scale (1.25x or 1.333x); exploit weight contrast.

**Color & tokens** — define tokens BEFORE applying: 4-6 named colors (one dominant, one accent, neutrals), type scale, 8pt spacing (8/16/24/32/48/64), 1-2 radii, 1-3 shadow elevations — all as CSS custom properties on `:root`. Never hardcode values in component code (`var(--color-accent)`, not `#3b82f6`). Commit fully to light OR dark. Token discipline is what lets `uiux-review-skill` axes 4 and 6 pass later.

**Motion** — CSS-only first (HTML projects); Motion library in React. One orchestrated page-load with staggered `animation-delay` beats scattered micro-interactions. IntersectionObserver for scroll reveals. Custom cubic-bezier easing — never default `ease`/`linear`. Durations: 200-400ms micro, 500-800ms reveals, 1000ms+ hero.

**Spatial** — asymmetric, overlapping, grid-breaking compositions create focal points; commit to generous whitespace OR controlled density, not both.

**Atmosphere** — textures (noise/grain), patterns, layered translucency, dramatic shadows, gradient meshes over flat solid backgrounds.

## Steps

1. **Analyze**: purpose, audience, constraints; ask if direction ambiguous
2. **Choose direction + signature element**; fonts + 3-5 color palette as CSS variables; motion strategy
3. **Structure**: semantic markup, intentional layout, mobile design first-class
4. **Apply visuals**: tokens → typography → atmosphere → spatial composition
5. **Motion & polish**: page-load stagger, scroll reveals, hover states, custom easing
6. **Refine & verify**: multiple viewports, WCAG AA contrast, `prefers-reduced-motion`, cohesion — and confirm it does NOT read as generic AI output

## Self-Review — 13-Axis Spot Check (before declaring done)

Run the rubric from `uiux-review-skill` §3 against your own build:

| 13 AI clusters | Defaulted to cluster A/B/C without a brand reason? |

Text-only sessions delegate screenshots to `image-analyzer-subagent` for the visual axes (1, 4, 6, 13) — never interpret pixels inline. Fix findings in the same pass.

## Technology Notes

React → Motion for animation, CSS custom properties for theming, scoped styles (CSS modules/styled-components). HTML/CSS → CSS-only animation, Grid/Flexbox, `@keyframes`. Vue → `<Transition>`/`<TransitionGroup>` + custom properties. Next.js image handling → `nextjs-image-usage-skill`.

## Common Issues

- **Output looks generic** → return to direction choice: more extreme direction, replace default fonts, intentional palette, add one unexpected layout element
- **Fonts not loading** → `<link>` tags (not `@import`), `font-display: swap`, specific fallback stack, self-host for reliability
- **Janky animations** → animate only `transform`/`opacity` (GPU), `will-change` sparingly, custom easing, 200-800ms, rAF for JS-driven
- **Desktop-only design** → mobile-first, relative units (rem/em/vh), test 375/768/1024 minimum

**Checklist**: matches chosen direction · distinctive fonts (not Inter/Roboto/Arial/system-ui) · palette via CSS custom properties · zero hardcoded visual values · exactly one signature element · `prefers-reduced-motion` respected · responsive at 375/768/1024 · WCAG AA passes · 13-axis self-review has no Critical/Major findings · not cluster A/B/C without brand reason · screenshots reviewed via `image-analyzer-subagent`.
