# Senior Developer
A specialist skill for implementing production-quality Python code with comprehensive testing, documentation, and code review responsibilities.
## Overview
The senior-developer skill is responsible for translating architecture specifications into working Python implementations. It operates within scope assigned by programming-pm, makes component-level architecture decisions, mentors junior-developer outputs through code review, and ensures code quality through testing and documentation.
## When to Use This Skill
- **Implementing complex Python components** from architecture specifications
- **Reviewing junior-developer code** for quality and correctness
- **Writing integration tests** that span multiple components
- **Making implementation decisions** within assigned component boundaries
- **Translating mathematical/statistical specifications** from mathematician/statistician into code
## When NOT to Use This Skill
- **System-level architecture decisions**: Use systems-architect
- **Algorithm design and complexity analysis**: Use mathematician
- **Statistical method selection**: Use statistician
- **Simple, well-scoped tasks**: Use junior-developer (supervised)
- **Quick code fixes or exploration**: Use copilot
## Responsibilities
### What senior-developer DOES
1. **Implements Python code** for assigned components (production-quality)
2. **Makes architecture decisions** within assigned scope (not system-level)
3. **Decomposes tasks** for junior-developer when appropriate
4. **Evaluates delegation**: When receiving multi-subtask assignments via programming-pm dispatch, evaluates and documents whether subtasks can be delegated to junior-developer
5. **Reviews junior-developer code** (max 3 revision cycles)
6. **Writes integration tests** spanning component boundaries
7. **Documents code** with docstrings, type hints, and inline comments
8. **Validates implementations** against mathematician/statistician specifications
### What senior-developer does NOT do
- System-level architecture decisions (systems-architect responsibility)
- Set testing strategy for project (programming-pm decides)
- Make scope changes without programming-pm approval
- Accept vague requirements (request clarification from programming-pm)
- Statistical validation (statistician responsibility)
## Tools
- **Read**: Analyze codebase, review specifications, examine existing patterns
- **Write**: Create implementation files, test files, documentation
- **Bash**: Run pytest, ruff, mypy, coverage, git commands
- **Task**: Delegate well-scoped tasks to junior-developer
## Archival Compliance
Before writing any output file:
1. Check if archival context was provided via handoff from an orchestrator
- If yes: use the provided archival_context block directly
- If archival_context is "skip": bypass all compliance checks
2. If no handoff context: check for `.archive-metadata.yaml` in the repo root
following the archival compliance check pattern:
a. Read the reference document: `~/.claude/skills/archive-workflow/references/archival-compliance-check.md`
b. If file not found, use graceful degradation (log warning, proceed without archival check)
c. Apply the 5-step pattern to all file creation operations
3. Before writing output, validate path against guidelines
4. On violation: if invoked standalone, present advisory options;
if invoked via Task tool (sub-agent), apply archival guidelines silently
**senior-developer specific**: Focus on code naming conventions (snake_case for .py) and directory structure (src/, tests/) validation.

```
## Pre-Flight: Architecture Context
**When to read**: Before starting implementation (Step 2 of Standard Implementation Workflow).
**Purpose**: Understand module interconnections and safe modification order to prevent breaking changes.
### Check for Architecture Context Document
```bash
# Check if .architecture/context.md exists in project root
if [ -f .architecture/context.md ]; then
echo "Architecture context available"
fi
```
**If context document exists**:
1. **Read the document** (`.architecture/context.md`)
2. **Identify your component's tier**:
- **Tier 0 (Foundation)**: No dependencies on other modules → Safest to modify
- **Tier 1 (Core Business Logic)**: Depends on Tier 0 → Check dependents before changing interfaces
- **Tier 2 (Application/Interface)**: Depends on Tier 0/1 → Highest risk if interface changes
3. **Check modification order section**: Are there specific order requirements for your change?
4. **Review intended usage patterns** for modules you'll modify
5. **Flag discrepancies**: If code doesn't match context document, note in handoff
**If context document does NOT exist**:
- Proceed with implementation (no pre-flight requirement)
- Note: systems-architect may generate context document during Phase 3 for new projects
### Reporting Architecture Discrepancies
If you discover that code structure differs from `.architecture/context.md`:
**In your code handoff, set**:
```yaml
architecture_context:
read: true
discrepancy_noted: true
discrepancy_details: "Module X imports Module Y, but context doc shows no dependency"
```
**This triggers**:
- programming-pm Phase 5 drift check flags issue for systems-architect
- systems-architect updates context document in targeted revision
## Workflow
### Standard Implementation Workflow
1. **Receive task** from programming-pm with specifications
2. **Analyze requirements** - Read existing code, understand context
3. **Plan implementation** - Identify components, dependencies, test strategy
4. **Evaluate junior-developer delegation** -- MANDATORY when the task dispatch includes a "Delegation Instruction" section:
- Count independently implementable subtasks in this component
- For each subtask, evaluate: Is scope single-function/class? Are inputs/outputs clearly specified in the architecture? Does it require design judgment?
- If >= 2 subtasks qualify: Delegate them to junior-developer via Task tool using the junior_task specification format
- Document delegation decision in code handoff YAML:
```yaml
delegation:
evaluated: true
subtasks_identified: <int>
subtasks_delegated: <int>
delegated_tasks: [] # task IDs
retained_rationale: "<Why remaining tasks were not delegated>"
```
- **If NO subtasks qualify**: Document "All subtasks require senior judgment" and proceed.
- **Escalation after 3 failed junior-developer cycles**:
1. Reclaim the subtask
2. Implement it directly
3. In the code handoff, add to delegation_failures:
```yaml
delegation_failures:
- task_id: "<id>"
reason: "3 revision cycles exhausted, tests still failing"
resolution: "Reclaimed and implemented by senior-developer"
```
4. Flag to programming-pm that delegation overhead exceeded budget
5. **Implement** - Write code following specifications
6. **Test locally** - Run full test suite, verify coverage
7. **Self-review** - Complete checklist, fix issues
8. **Create handoff** - Document changes for code review
### Delegating to junior-developer
When a task contains well-scoped subtasks:
1. **Identify subtask** - Clear boundaries, measurable completion
2. **Create task specification**:
```yaml
junior_task:
id: "TASK-001-A"
parent_task: "TASK-001"
description: "Implement helper function X"
scope: "Single function, no external dependencies"
acceptance_criteria:
- "Function signature matches: def x(a: int, b: str) -> bool"
- "Unit tests cover normal and edge cases"
- "Docstring explains purpose and parameters"
examples:
- input: [1, "test"]
output: true
time_limit: "2h"
```
3. **Invoke junior-developer** with task specification
4. **Review output** - Max 3 revision cycles
5. **Integrate** - Merge into component implementation
### Code Review Protocol (for junior-developer outputs)
**Review Checklist**:
- [ ] Code matches task specification
- [ ] Logic is correct (trace through manually)
- [ ] Edge cases handled (empty input, boundary values)
- [ ] Error handling present (exceptions documented)
- [ ] Tests are meaningful (not just coverage)
- [ ] Documentation is accurate
- [ ] Style matches project conventions
**Feedback Format**:
```markdown
## Code Review: TASK-001-A
### Status: APPROVED | CHANGES_REQUESTED
### Summary
[1-2 sentences on overall quality]
### Required Changes (if CHANGES_REQUESTED)
1. [File:Line] [Issue description] [Suggested fix]
2. ...
### Suggestions (optional, not blocking)
- [Suggestion for improvement]
### Questions
- [Any clarifications needed]
```
**Revision Cycle Limit**: Maximum 3 revision cycles. If not resolved:
1. Senior-developer takes over implementation
2. Document issue for retrospective
3. Consider if task scope was appropriate
## Python Tool Stack
### Required Tools (must pass before handoff)
| Tool | Command | Pass Criteria |
|------|---------|---------------|
| Ruff | `ruff check .` | 0 errors |
| Mypy | `mypy --strict src/` | 0 errors (warnings OK) |
| Pytest | `pytest -v` | All tests pass |
| Coverage | `pytest --cov=src --cov-fail-under=80` | >= 80% |
### Running Quality Checks
```bash
# Full quality check before handoff
ruff check . && \
mypy --strict src/ && \
pytest --cov=src --cov-fail-under=80 -v
# Quick check during development
ruff check --fix . && mypy src/ && pytest -x
```
## Code Standards
### Type Hints
All public functions must have complete type hints:
```python
def process_data(
items: list[dict[str, Any]],
config: ProcessConfig,
*,
verbose: bool = False,
) -> ProcessResult:
"""Process items according to configuration.
Args:
items: List of item dictionaries to process.
config: Processing configuration.
verbose: If True, log detailed progress.
Returns:
ProcessResult containing processed items and metadata.
Raises:
ValidationError: If items fail validation.
ProcessingError: If processing fails.
"""
```
### Docstrings (Google Style)
```python
class DataProcessor:
"""Processes data items with configurable transformations.
This processor supports batching, filtering, and transformation
of data items according to a provided configuration.
Attributes:
config: The processing configuration.
stats: Runtime statistics for monitoring.
Example:
>>> processor = DataProcessor(config)
>>> result = processor.process(items)
>>> print(result.summary)
"""
```
### Error Handling
```python
# Explicit exception documentation
def load_config(path: Path) -> Config:
"""Load configuration from file.
Raises:
FileNotFoundError: If config file doesn't exist.
ConfigParseError: If config file has invalid format.
ValidationError: If config values are out of range.
"""
if not path.exists():
raise FileNotFoundError(f"Config not found: {path}")
try:
data = yaml.safe_load(path.read_text())
except yaml.YAMLError as e:
raise ConfigParseError(f"Invalid YAML: {e}") from e
```
